Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2016 Author Posted November 15, 2016 I don't like, or for that matter get the whole purpose of, this idea where they first narrow it down to the three "finalists" before revealing the winner. It's not like there was some intermediate step the top three had to pass in order to become finalists. This merely is an in-advance leak of the partial results of an already taken election and pre-reveals to all fans who may have an interest in someone else that their guy can't possibly win or even come close.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 I don't particularly like it either, but I suspect that the purpose is to create some pre-announcement buzz. It's a reminder that the awards are coming, and it gets a few more people writing about, talking about, and tweeting about, baseball during a few days in November between football games. As for T.J. Rivera, he'll still be eligible for Rookie of the Year in 2017. His chances to get a lot of playing time were dramatically reduced yesterday, however.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2016 Author Posted November 15, 2016 The only problem is that for whatever extra buzz they might create (assuming it creates any) they probably lose at least as much by eliminating a bunch of guys in advance, whether they be a distant 9th or a close 4th, while giving fans of the pre-eliminated crew disincentive to follow further. It would be different if there were some sort of off-season awards banquet and they wanted to make sure that all potential winners were present and not out on their off-season huntin'/fishin' trips. But instead the 'big reveal' usually winds up being a couple of guys in some MLBN studio somewhere with the winner (maybe) on a video/phone hookup from his living room.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 Ironic that we were so happy in August of 2015 to be able to hold on to Matz and give up Fullmer. Now, I think most here would have it the other way around. Here's to hoping Matz wins the Cy Young next year.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2016 Author Posted November 15, 2016 I wonder, given the theoretical choice of either/or right now, if GMs would choose Fulmer or Matz for their staffs over say the next five years?I suspect that Matz might still carry a majority in an anonymous type of survey although I have nothing specific to back that up.
