What's the argument for pulling him there? He didn't need to be pinch-hit for. He had thrown 108 pitches, 11 fewer than Bumgarner ultimately threw. He was still on top of the situation in the seventh with the big threat fueled by a cheapie infield hit. And the third out wasn't struck all that hard either.

The drive to center was back in the sixth. He was the the best pitcher pitching the game of his life. Going to the bullpen while that is still available to you turns the contest into a game of Russian Roulette.

If Bumgarner can go 9 or 10, an eighth shouldn't be treated as a no-brainer for Syndergaard. This is the whole season on the line.

On the Loney play, he was closer to it than I remember but I guess my point here is that if the 2nd baseman can field you should let him.

But he couldn't. Not in time, anyhow.

It's not tough to read between the lines to see that Tom and Nancy are bitter at the Mets and were actively rooting for San Francisco.

Perhaps it's the statue thing (legitimate gripe). Perhaps it's that he wasn't included on the SNY team when it launched (sour grapes in my book). But without question, the Seavers are bitter.

He doesn't remember rooting for the Giants? I'll tell you. I may not remember a particular Mets-Brewers game in 2011, but I can say unequivocally, that I was rooting for the Mets. But whatever. He can root for whoever he wants. The Mets were his employers. He has no obligation to be a fan.

I know for most here, the name Seaver is revered. But for me, I never witnessed it. I have faint memories of an aging Seaver in '83, and an unsuccessful comeback in '87. My direct memories are of an unlikeable, annoying announcer who displayed open contempt for modern day players.

He is also an ass. My son and I have ridden in elevators with two baseball players in our lifetimes. One of them was Derek Jeter, at home, in his own time, when he had no obligation to say anything to anyone. The other was Tom Seaver, at Shea Stadium, during a game.

Jeter could not have been more gracious, welcoming and friendly, and seeming a really down to earth guy. Seaver was the exact opposite. Stone-faced, staring straight ahead, making it evident with his body language that he wanted no part of talking to the little boy looking up at him.

Fuck the Seavers, I say.

Same. I get the history and he'll always be 'The Franchise' and all that. It's like if you took Matt Harvey but never saw him pitch any games and he didn't have a World Series ring.

I also don't understand thinking Seaver can do no wrong and not liking Matt Harvey. They really seem awfully similar.

Seaver has a much better track record, however. And he was the leader of a legendary Mets team, the first legendary Mets team.

Hall of Famer, World Champion. These things go a long way.

I forgive a lot of things as it pertains to the '86 Mets.

Anyway, I get why he is revered. Not saying it's wrong. It's just that there isn't the personal connection for me, so I kinda think he's an ass.

Well, yeah. There's no denying that. As someone who was eight years old in 1971, when everyone in the neighborhood revered Tom Seaver, I can say that I'd much prefer it if he wasn't an ass. But we didn't know anything about that then.

He is an ass, and an ungracious-ice-cube of a Diamondclub Elevator rider if
there ever was one. As for Nancy, someone get Stockholm on the horn and
get her removed (or at least put on double secret probaation) from the Wifey
Watch Hall of Fame NOW!

bet you would've if there was Instagram though.

I'm fine with letting players be themselves. I don't need to be friends with them. Harvey's (probably) an arrogant hipster. that's fine. Seaver's a jerk. Doesn't change what I want/get from them in terms of fandom.
