My standard complaint about swinging at the first pitch when you're down by a bunch in the ninth.

Yow, Bruce getting boooded bad. But that wasn't a horrible at bat. He made the guy throw some pitches.

Seems to me that Bruce is just trying to reproduce his swing when he's up there, no matter where the pitch. Like the bat should find it's way to the ball by itself.

I think we sometimes forget that Syndergaard is a just-turned 24 y/o in his first full season and expect more consistency out of him than is reasonable.
Part of it is the Braves overall approach -- one which they totally flipped from just a year or two ago -- where they aim to put the ball in play at the expense of power but also in a way that reduces strikeouts and lengthens ABs. Atlanta batters mostly avoided chasing tonight, swung and missed at remarkably few pitches considering who they were facing, and fouled off a ton of them to drive the pitch count up to full-game capacity within just four innings.
