He did move in a few steps, but kinda like a sand crab. He could have been 2 strides closer (& sooner, still avoiding the runner) if he moved in like a human.

He didn't do awful there. And that was Gordon running, so ...
The issue there once again was footwork, Wilmer's notorious problem (no matter where you put him).
