One thing about Montero's start was that he was definitely getting squeezed by the ump (in fairness, both pitchers were). With a bigger strike zone he might have gone longer.

Yeah, the mental clicker in my head that "calls" balls & strikes prior to seeing the ump's official call was wrong a whole bunch of times last night; both strikes that I thought were balls, balls that I thought strikes, and across the board in both the top and bottom of innings.

And I thought we dodged a bullet when Angel Hernandez, the most incompetent umpire in major league history*, left town after the last series.
When Montero started out in the minors, his strength was his control. (It was Bartolo like) I didn't see the game, so his number of walks seemed out of character. Thanks.

Strike-thrower was Montero's rep before he came up in 2014. But in the majors he's walked 35 in 61.2 innings. That's, um, not good.

He's got the stuff, he just has trouble controlling it. He was keeping the ball down, but bounced too many pitches.

Yo, through a translator.

I wanted to see the translator get hit in the face with a shaving cream pie.

I don't think Montero's problem is controlling his stuff, it's not wanting to throw it where anyone can hit it. He pitched scared all night, and got away with it.
