Runs. Let's get some.

Baserunners. Let's start with base runners. Preferably not after two out. But, you know, whatever you can do.

Next time I have trouble sleeping, I will think of the Mets batters (other than Jose) today.

Instead of counting sheep you can count pop-ups.

Gotta love De Aza!

You knew the game was over when DeAza was the final batter. If he's still on the roster when we return from the break, I'll be disappointed.

He should have been DFA'd weeks ago but perhaps Sandy won't admit his mistake or he thinks he can find a sucker for a trade. Either way, having him up in that spot was terrible. If Yo was n/a than Terry didn't have a choice as Loney had to PH for the pitcher.

Yeah, I dunno... feel kinda lucky to only be six out. Rest up, boys!

Even if Cespedes is unavailable (and he had to be, or else fire Terry now) I would send Loney up there. the worst they can do is walk him (and THEY don't know Cespedes can't hit at all, send him out on deck for the pitcher), and then i'd rather see Syndergaard with the tying run on 2nd needing a single instead of deAza with the tying run on 1st needing a double. its possible Syndergaard wasnt available either... I'd use deGrom.

You make a good point Nymr83. They saved Loney with 2 outs for something that never happened.

That's some really stretchy thinking. And that's even ignoring the fact that you need James Loney to get you from one scenario to the other.

I was at the game with YoungerPooper and my favorite aunt (also a Met fan, if not quite as intense).

"Who is this, again? The guy who hit himself," says she, in the ninth.

ME: "De Aza. Game's over, I think."

AUNT: "Really?"

ME: "Probably. I hope to hell I'm wrong, but... yeah."

YoungerPooper: "Does that mean we should boo HIM, too?" (We'd been having an ongoing conversation about Murph and Harper, and why fans were booing; she still cheers Murph, quietly.)

ME: "No. Probably not. He seems like a nice man, but I just wish someone else were playing his position, because he's not playing very well."

YoungerPooper: [After a second] "I'm still cheering Murphy."

No - my argument is that you are in a better position with Loney up compared to de Aza - even if you think they'll walk him. if they don't walk him then you undeniably have the better hitter at the plate anyway.

What would you do if you were the Nationals' manager and Loney comes up with Cespedes holding a bat on deck? unless you have a mole in the Mets locker room telling you Cespedes can't swing is there really any way you can chance pitching around Loney? Terry outsmarted himself by only taking into account what he knew and not thinking of what the Nats didn't know.

For what it's worth, I think that Rivera was still available so saving Loney for the unlikely event that de Aza got on wasn't the only option.

I certainly agree that I would have sent Cspedes to the on-deck circle.
