Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2016 Author Posted June 17, 2016 On May 31, Steven Matz had a chance to lock down his first Schaefer Player (and Pitcher) of the Month award. When he took the mound in the top of the 6th, he had thrown five scoreless innings and looked to be on his way to earning between 3 and 5 Schaefer points, if not more. But things unraveled, and Matz had to settle for 1.97 points. That would have been enough to clinch the title for May, except that Noah Syndergaard had a rare relief appearance during that final game of the month, and scoreless inning earned him 0.69 points, enough to put him over the top with just a little to spare.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2016 Author Posted June 17, 2016 Points earned by bench players in May: Juan Lagares 1.31, Alejandro De Aza 0.50, Matt Reynolds 0.47, Ty Kelly 0.12, Rene Rivera 0.06.

Guest Mets Guy in Michigan Guests Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Those might be your best cards ever -- and the bar was very high already! Bravo.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Spectacular edition.I have the sense that Noah got more Schaefer mileage out of a truncated start on May 28 than any Met to date.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Has anyone won a month by as little as 5/100 points? That portraitcard is just dreamy! Er, I mean... uh, nevermind...

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2016 Author Posted June 17, 2016 This is in fact the closest Player of the Month finish ever, but not by much! In August 2014 Juan Lagares edged Lucas Duda by 0.07 points. The widest margin (excluding 2005, when we were asking voters to award 10 points in each game) was in July 2006, when Carlos Beltran beat Jose Valentin by 9.47 points.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 I look at Familia in action, and I hear Howard Dean's Iowa caucus night scream.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2016 Author Posted June 17, 2016 And that's why Jeurys Familia will never be the President of the United States.
Guest themetfairy Guests Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Howard Dean's scream seems so quaint by this year's standards....
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2016 Author Posted June 17, 2016 That's true. It's hard to believe there was a time when appearing to be mentally unhinged was seen as a negative for a presidential candidate.
