Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 Carlos Diaz and Bob Bailor for Sid Fernandez. What a heist. And amazing that we traded one Spanish-surnamed Hawaiian for another. I imagined that's the only time that has happened.I'm a BIG fan of the 1983 Mets, but never knew he was nicknamed "Bimbo."
Guest Mets Willets Point Guests Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 Bimbo pitched for Bambi.

Great year in relief 1983'He was great in 1985 too, maybe even better than in '83. I remember this because I was in a NL only Strat-O-Matic draft league with 1985 cards, and Diaz was in my bullpen. I was all set to draft Sid Fernandez in that league ... I was ready to pick Sid ... only one pick stood between me and Sid ... and then that guy, with that pick right before me, picked Sid.Bimbo for Bambi. Good one, Willets.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 So, he has one half-bad year in 1986. Bad, but not a disaster, and he disappears from the game at 28. Never pitched in the minors after that either. What traumatic disaster befell his arm?
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I swear Carlos Diaz was the last dependable lefty specialist the Mets had until Dennis Cook. No matter the bounty he and Bob Bailor brought back, he was missed then and he is no doubt missed by his loved ones now.RIP.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 In my blizzard-induced idleness I stumbled across the promotional video to "Caught Up in You" by 38 Special (who apparently never used a period in the name, like the gun would have). In the video, drummer Ed VanGetson (at least, I think it's him — there were two drummers) wears an Atlanta Braves jersey. And since the Braves of that vintage wore numbers on the front, I was able to make out that he was wearing a "36." (You'd perhaps expect a "38.") Which 1982 Brave was being paid tribute to, but Carlos Diaz! This may quite not count as a Mets-in-Popular-Culture sighting, but it made me happy to think on the late and lamented Señor Diaz.[youtube:d0dhv36m]zg21Rkew874[/youtube:d0dhv36m]
