Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 How many players have played in postseason games for the Mets? At the moment, the count is 126. Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 But 150 is within reach.Any chance you can place that in chronological order, with Agee, Garrett, and Jones up top?
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 I wonder how many players have been on postseason rosters without appearing in games.Ones that immediately come to mind:Ed Hearn and Randy Niemann (1986)Royce Ring and Ramon Castro (2006)Who was the backup catcher in '88? Sasser or Lyons?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2015 Author Posted October 7, 2015 How about this? It's sorted by game date by lineup position. It looks like the 100th postseason Met chronologically is the first alphabetically, Kurt Abbott. This list isn't in true order of appearance. In that first game, for example, Al Weis pinch ran for Art Shamsky in the fourth lineup spot, which puts him ahead of Ken Boswell on the list. If you want to refine the exact order, you'll have to take a look at how each game unfolded, but this should be a good starting point for anyone interested in doing that.[list:y93htvbk]1969-10-04 Tommie Agee1969-10-04 Wayne Garrett1969-10-04 Cleon Jones1969-10-04 Art Shamsky1969-10-04 Al Weis1969-10-04 Rod Gaspar1969-10-04 Ken Boswell1969-10-04 Ed Kranepool1969-10-04 Jerry Grote1969-10-04 Bud Harrelson1969-10-04 J. The Mets used only 22 players in the 1969 postseason, for example. They used the same number in 1973, 1986 (when there was only a 24-man roster), and 1988. They used 25 in 1999, 26 in 2000, and 24 in 2006. The 26 in 2000 would be because Derek Bell was injured in the NLDS and replaced (by whom?) for the NLCS.Was it Ring and Castro in 2006? Did the Mets have the same rosters in the NLDS and NLCS that year? I honestly don't remember.I do recall Hearn and Niemann in 1986. Mackey Sasser did play in the 1988 NLCS for the Mets.

Royce Ring was on the roster for the division series only; was replaced by Anderson Hernandez for the LCS.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2015 Author Posted October 10, 2015 Twelve Mets made their franchise post-season debut last night. Therefore, counting David Wright, 13 of the 25 Mets have seen postseason action already. Those who haven't yet are: Syndergaard, Harvey, Matz, Colon, Niese, Reed, Robles, Goeddel, Nieuwenhuis, Flores, Conforto, and Plawecki. I've followed up on Edgy's post where he sequenced the first game of the 1969 NLCS, and also took care of the 2015 Mets from last night's Game 1, at the bottom of the list. The count is now at 138, and of those who haven't played yet, Syndergaard, Harvey, and Conforto are most likely to see action, two of them as soon as tonight.I don't think I knew that neither Donn Clendenon, Ron Swoboda, nor Ed Charles appeared at all in the 1969 NLCS. That's a bit freaky, especially seeing as how Clendenon is long talked about being the guy who got them there and that Swoboda had played pretty much full time down the stretch during August & September (30 of his 52 RBIs that year came after Aug 1).But the Braves threw a bunch of right-handers at us and Gil loved him some platooning. Plus there wasn't a lot of PH-ing or relieving: just because your staff gives up 15 runs in 3 games is no reason to use more than three guys out of the pen during the series (McGraw, Ryan, and Taylor twice).1) Tommie Agee: 10/4/19692) Wayne Garrett: 10/4/19693) Cleon Jones: 10/4/19694) Tom Seaver: 10/4/19695) Jerry Grote: 10/4/19696) Ed Kranepool: 10/4/19697) Ken Boswell: 10/4/19698) Bud Harrelson: 10/4/19699) Art Shamsky: 10/4/196910) Al Weis: 10/4/196911) J.
