Guest Mets Guy in Michigan Guests Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 I saw this on Uniwatch today and didn't know if it's an old card, or a new card designed to look old. But it's pretty neat! I'll try to find some other examples of Mets cards. Wonder if they team will be singing again this year...
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 I think its old, because it has the old skyline logo that doesn't include the CitiCorp building. (Or are my eyes not keen enough to see it?)Later
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Look how young Mr. Met was! He still had his hair!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Hopefully Mr. Met is calling on the black kids later.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Yeah, the caucasian-ness of that holiday card dates it. They usedto send out cards each year to plan holders. I don't know if they still do, cards cost money! Can't find the CPF favorite Mr. Met on a Central Park bridge one. It's around here somewhere.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Merry Christmas. Please leave the money in small unmarked bills in Locker 119 at the bus depot.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 I don't know why I was thinking bridge, maybe mixing up memories...

Wonder if they team will be singing again this year...The Mets have a very long running tradition of sending out Met themed holiday cards to its staff, season ticket holders and others. The tradition dates back to the team's original owners and has continued, unbroken to this very day even though the team's in the poorhouse and you would think can't afford anything. The holiday card at the top of this thread is from (December) 1977.[fimg=544]http://www.kcmets.com/CPF/mrmetxmas.jpg[/fimg]This one's from Winter 2006-07.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Wishing you aHappy Holidayand an AmazinNew Millenium. That is the message that was printed in the holiday card that went out in December 1999.And, yes, the Mets misspelled millennium. Then again, they got one run out of a grand slam.
Guest cooby Guests Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 I am thinking next year we should have Zvon design us a Mets holiday card! I'd buy them...

Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Trying to come up with something that covers both biggies. No, Festivus is not yet big enough. Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 Nicely played. You can use garland bunting, or gold ribbon bunting, in place of the bridge.
Guest themetfairy Guests Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 How would it look with a blue Christmas tree? And nice work on the menorah
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 Perhaps the menorah should slope downward from the center like the NYC skyline.

Then again, they got one run out of a grand slam. Also wasn't the end of the millenium, so..I first read a variation on this argument at the end of the 1970s. "It's not really the end of the 1970s," it was said in so many words. "That won't be until December 31, 1980. And, really, this decade should be called the '80s, and the one that begins on January 1, 1981 should be called the '90s."Nobody bought it in December 1979. Few bought the larger albeit arguable version in December 1999.Brooklyn is technically part of Long Island, so the Islanders aren't really leaving Long Island.Except they are. And rolling the odometer from 2000 to 2001 floated a fraction of the boats that 1999 to 2000 did.Sometimes reasonably informed perception carries the day.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 1979 was certainly the end of the 1970s. It wasn't, however, the end of the 198th decade. That ended at the end of 1980. We just don't count decades the way we do centuries. Anyone who says that 1980 was still the 1970s is just plain wrong.Similarly, the 1900s ended on December 31, 1999, but the 20th Century ended on December 31, 2000.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 actually, it WAS the end of the 70s, just not the end of the decade. Of course, When someone gives you a 'decades' trivia question they're usually doing 70-79, not 71-80. It's just a counting error of course, and one that doesn't really matter much. I guess because the ability to count to 2000 doesn't seem that tough to just gloss over. Of course, we're measuring years from a fictional event so...Anyway, spellcheck existed in 1999. I'm sure of it. Although Ben Baumer was quoted as saying the Mets barely had computers when he was hired in..2005? And my browser hasn't caught on that millennial is now also a noun.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 Spellcheck existed at least as early as 1991, when the magazine I worked for installed Macs and it was all "guess what this thing can do!"We don't know if the Mets had proofreaders in the last century.

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 On the day that Hello Dolly premiered in movie theaters, the Mets sent out this holiday card:[fimg=655]https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8624/16042119331_2cfd545d42_o.jpg[/fimg]Courtesy of the batmagadanleadoff collection

A Festivus Pole wouldbe fun, and maybe work in a little Kwanzaa somehow?

It's too cluttered as it is.

The place where I worked had a former employee who had gone on to temp for the Mets and she sent us the card. It hung in the reception area well after the alleged millennium kicked in. I judged it up for grabs and I grabbed it.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 I didn't spend a lot of time looking, but the images of thesecards seems kinda light online. I had some of them and gavethem to someone on mofo I think, and then a few more yearlyafter that. Would make a cool web page if someone has accessto a large collection of them.
