G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 5DrqfY3yuWE Lindsey! Ralph! Bob! Then the NBC crew! A Frankenstein of telecasts from October 6, 1973, but what the hell, "Frankenstein" was a big hit that year for the Edgar Winter Group.Classic TV Sports explains as best as can be explained.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Cool! Gonna watch some of this with my fish sticks and Rice-A-Roni.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 (edited) My younger brother was an A's fan and my mom told us there would be consequences for squabbling before this series started. The series ended with me in the backyard hiding in an empty refrigerator box near the end of game seven. Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Thoughts on the Pre-Game:[*:27yqlgep]Cool to see Lindsey have to pass the mic around to Ralph and Bob like three 50-year-old Beastie Boys.[/*:m:27yqlgep][*:27yqlgep]Artificial turf in the post-season.[/*:m:27yqlgep][*:27yqlgep]Murph is already silky smooth.[/*:m:27yqlgep][*:27yqlgep]Billingham vs. Seaver sounds like a sad mismatch, no matter whos hitting.[/*:m:27yqlgep][*:27yqlgep]Good job pitching Getting by Ralph. That was Ralph, right?[/*:m:27yqlgep][*:27yqlgep]Bat Garrett leadoff! Yogi was stupid like a fox.[/*:m:27yqlgep][/list:o:27yqlgep]
Guest cooby Guests Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 What a blast from the past! Loved it! Felt like I was in my living room with Dad!1973 was by far my favorite Mets team. I will never ever forget that summer
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 WOWZERS! I was looking all over for this a while back. It must have gone up recently. First thing I want to see is Seaver's double. I hope more 73 playoff games pop up. Full game telecasts of the NY games are as rare as they come (post 1970). As I've mentioned before, I've been looking for them for years. They've been erased from history. But I thought this one was lost too, so there's hope.I watched this game in Whitestone at my cousins house in '73. Alls I remember is how Seaver looked after the Bench walk off. This does not have footage of the very end of the game. Bummer. But it has the audio for the end. Still, excellent find.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Thoughts on Inning One.[*:1grm41hb]Dont know what was a more remarkable part of the leadoff hit --- that it hit the bag or that Morgan chased it down and held Garrett to a single.[/*:m:1grm41hb][*:1grm41hb]Is there anything more automatic than Millan getting the bunt sign in a bunting situation? Or that hed successfully get the bunt down?[/*:m:1grm41hb][*:1grm41hb]Always loved the huge letters the Reds wore on their backs, especially when its a multi-lettered name like BILLINGHAM or HOUSEHOLDER and the name arched like a rainbow across the upper half of the players back.[/*:m:1grm41hb][*:1grm41hb]No fastballs for Staub with a runner on.[/*:m:1grm41hb][*:1grm41hb]Jones gets the hit with the RISP, but two factors I had forgotten keep Wayne at third --- the speed of the artificial turf, and Geronimo being an aggressive, shallow-playing centerfielder.[/*:m:1grm41hb][*:1grm41hb]Billingham looks like Ron Hodges brother.[/*:m:1grm41hb][*:1grm41hb]Reds scouted that Jones cant hit the inside curve.[/*:m:1grm41hb][*:1grm41hb]Billingham hasnt given up any runs but Pedro Bourbon is warming up in the first! This man has no idea that, before the week is out, he will be eating a baseball cap.[/*:m:1grm41hb][*:1grm41hb]Billingham and Seaver met earlier in the season, according to Ralph and had the fastest game of the year. One hour and 37 minutes!![/*:m:1grm41hb][*:1grm41hb]Derrel Chaney ends the threat by starting a doubplay. Derrel Chaney![/*:m:1grm41hb][*:1grm41hb]Jimmy the Greek endorses Edge gel. Nothing against Jimmy, but he's not the first man I'd think of as a model when I worry about my appearance.[/*:m:1grm41hb][*:1grm41hb]Were Back. Look at all those studs in the Reds lineup. And they dont even have George Foster. The Reds were so loaded that they stashed him in the American Association most of that season. The Mets, on the other hand, have Jerry Grote batting sixth! On a playoff team![/*:m:1grm41hb][*:1grm41hb]Also absent from the lineup, number 13, Davey Concepcion. What gives?! This isnt the Big Red Machine! Its merely a really great lineup that outclasses the Mets top to bottom.[/*:m:1grm41hb][*:1grm41hb]Seaver got Rose on an inside slider with a little plate. He wouldnt have thrown that to a pull hitter.[/*:m:1grm41hb][*:1grm41hb]Dan Driessen is batting third. Pretty soon hed be the best fourth outfielder/backup first baseman in the world, once Griffey and Foster become established.[/*:m:1grm41hb][/list:o:1grm41hb]
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 I liked the 1974 DUSTER commercial, particularly.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 I liked the old school opening with the video montage playing to Meet the Mets. It almost defines my youth.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 The opening filmed with Ralph, Lindsey and Bob on the field was funny, because they only had one microphone and kept having to hand it around.Ralph sitting on a stack of tires talking about Getty gas was priceless. And the ad for the luxurious 1974 Chrysler New Yorker that looked like it got about 6 miles to the gallon and came with its own zip code......
Guest cooby Guests Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 The ads are great!Listening to the opening and my mind subconsciously sings 'here's Tommie Agee, Cleon jones' at the end, and there they are!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 Why was Dixieland music so happening at the time? Did The Sting launch a Dixieland revival or was it just another part of the revival? Because "Meet the Dixie Mets" was THE version of "Meet the Mets" until like 1982.

Guest themetfairy Guests Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 The big thing was getting into the World Series, where the Winner's Share was $20,000 apiece and the Loser's Share was a generous $15,000. That was considered huge money!
