Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Luis Tiant, Dick Allen, Ken Boyer, Gil Hodges, Bob Howsam, Jim Kaat, Minnie Minoso, Tony Oliva, Billy Pierce, and Maury Wills.Voting in the past hasn't supported me (if I recall correctly, Kaat has gotten a lot of support), but I think Allen, Hodges, and Oliva stand above the field. Allen's tops there with regard to productivity. He's been hurt in the past by the widespread belief that he was a lousy teammate, but I think that's abated.
Guest Mets Willets Point Guests Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 There are plenty of lousy teammates in the Hall.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 (edited) Got TSN link over at fb's Gil Hodges Belongs in The Hallof Fame page. If one doesn't think Gil belongs in The Hall,I don't recommend one saying so on that page hee hee.http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/story/2014-10-30/baseball-hall-of-fame-2015-candidates-eligible-golden-era-committee Edited October 30, 2014 by Guest
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 30, 2014 Author Posted October 30, 2014 I got kicked off of that page. Guy that runs it (Ron?) is all heart but emotionally mercurial. Fantastically so. Then he begged me come back, re-adding me a couple of times without my consent.
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I got booted once, and quit once too. Forget which order.I just 'joined' again.

I'd like to say it looks good but aside from the FB page I don't hear much about the situation.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Very strange guy...and not in a good or fun or eccentric way. Proceed with caution. But go Gil!
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 IIRC, Minoso, Tiant or Olivo would be the first Cuban-born player elected to the Hall on the general ballot. Martin DiHigo was elected by the group that voted for the Negro Leagues.Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 30, 2014 Author Posted October 30, 2014 Tony Prez made it on the really general ballot, voted in by the BBWAA.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Thanks for the "gotcha'".Guess I didn't RC.Later
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 In general agreement with Edgy. Allen's on top of the heap in terms of numbers without a doubt. Hodges should've been in 30 years ago. Oliva's hurt by a somewhat abbreviated period of greatness.

Mr. Bill Hall has done a magnificent job organizing and pushing the Gil Into The Hall Drive. He seems like a great guy and he's put a lot of work into the cause. If Gil makes it into the hall this round, Mr. Hall deserves much of the credit.

Along with oddities like the alleged reason Rick Ferrell got inducted (the story was that an old GM or owner lobbied each member of the committee to give a then ailing Ferrell a sympathy vote) or the fact that Charlie Gehringer was such a Yankee hater that he never voted for a Yankee, ever.Granted you can make a case that stuff like the This Old Cub documentary, and the Cubs retiring #10 was part of a campaign ahead of Ron Santo's posthumous election in 2012, but for the most part, all three committees have been real air tight when it comes to players, to the point where Santo and Joe Gordon are the only post 1900 players to get in through this particular door. So it is conceivable that a social media movement for Hodges could be looked at as a negative by the voters. Almost like their hand is going to be forced, and they'll look no better than the one that they replaced.

The things you mention were perpetrated by people "inside" the game. This Gil Hodges thing is brought to the forefront by regular people like you and I. And that's the important thing for me. That fans of the man are still going to bat for him, even over 40 years after his passing. That should mean something to this committee. If the fb drive to get him in hurts his chances, something is really wrong.
