Retro cards have become such a thing that I'm staring at the actual cards of Matlack and El Sid and thinking "those really look authentic."

You'd be right about the Sid. Here's his original '86 Topps base card, below. The one above is a retro re-make.

Tug M.

OE: You asked starters, so never mind (unless this is somehow right).

Tug's score wouldn't have cracked the top 15, even if he was eligible.

Good quiz! Realized, as the likes of Darling and Koosman were nixed, that once the other elite guys were accounted for there was more merit in shorter stints that packed a punch.

I was surprised that Cone didn't make the cut. My eyeballs sez he woulda made it, easily. I was originally gonna do a top 10, but extended the list just so Willey could be included. He's one of my favorite Mets.

Here's the top 10 on that list, from the bottom up, or the bottom 10 in descending order (Mets career war >= 4.4)

Jack Fisher 202.54
Jonathon Niese 143.82
Mike Pelfrey 140.05
Ed Lynch 125.92
Bobby Jones 124.05
Gary Gentry 119.60
Dillon Gee 118.46
Pete Falcone 114.65
Jim McAndrew 107.30
John Maine 106.27

The eligibility credentials makes it a funny quiz. Those bottom 10 were all decent pitchers. But mostly decent enough to keep floating on, and so look bad by that metric.

Exactly! If I included pitchers with career WAR's < 4.4, then you'd see what bad is, and Jack Fisher wouldn't be near the bottom. You'd have to be decent just to accumulate a 4.4 career WAR. A pitcher who averaged less than a 1.0 WAR per season probably wouldn't get enough innings to get to 4.4.

Unless he was the Rey Ordonez of pitchers.
