Shoulda traded him for something. Something.

288 homers
574 doubles (21st All-Time, Active Leader)
1475 walks (20th All-Time, Active Leader)
136 Outfield assists (Active Leader)

Might have been a real beast if he wasn't so health conscious in the outfield, but that's speculative, and he did end up playing 162 games twice. Never hurt at all through his prime years, defined liberally.

I was in the room for his announcement. His largely unchoreographed goodbye "and adios" was very moving. The passing out of quotes later in the evening from former teammates and such later in the evening in the press box -- prepared by an outside PR firm -- detracted from the emotion only a little.

I swear I always miss the good stuff.

His numbers are certainly nice, era not withstanding. He's probably one of those small hall/big hall argument guys.

Everyone's talking about loving to keep him around as a coach. Is that something he's talked about previously? I always wonder where this stuff comes from, and why he'd have any particular loyalty to the Mets of all the teams he's played for just because it's the last.

I don't know who everybody is. Everybody is talking in this regard?

I imagine he'd be loyal to the Mets if they made him an offer that satisfied him. Last employer? Well it does give the team the first shot at him.

But I haven't heard anybody speaking in this regard. Certainly I'd like to have 25 guys with his batting eye.

Y'know, those people. Stoppin'. Starin'. You can't see their faces... only the shadows of their eyes.

If there's a chance he could convey a sliver of that hitting knowledge, I'd float the guy an offer. If it doesn't work out, you cut him loose during the first losing streak, send him off where the sun is shining through the pouring rain.

I'm not exactly tabulating it, but I've easily heard half a dozen people float the idea.

Certainly, if he can impart his wisdom, I'm all for it. Doesn't always translate to teaching though. I'm just curious if anyone's heard him actively voice this idea.

Well, if his teaching is as clear as his post-game interview this afternoon, whoever hires him is screwed. But you know how this coaching game goes. You start out grinding your shit out in the minors. And very few guys who made the big falafel want to spend their next life back on the bus circuit.

And Bobby made the big falafel.

They mentioned yesterday on the broadcast that Abreu was a rookie under Terry Collins too in Houston. He might have some loyalty there.

Like Robin Ventura for instance. or Mattingly. Times are changing.

Sure. Of course, it helps to get your first job at the top of the field. But I imagine such opportunities are still quite rare.

Rubin reports that he has expressed interest in being a batting coach, though not right away. Best to him, certainly. He's also planning on playing in Venezuela this winter.

On the hitting coach front, Mets Blog (citing various sources) lists candidates under consideration to include Abreu, Edgardo Alfonzo, Savannah hitting coach Val Pascucci, LV hitting coach George Greer, and roving instructor Jack Voigt.
Lamar Johnson is expected to be reassigned within the org.

Would be an interesting turn of events if the guy Dave Hudgens brought into the organization turns out to be his eventual replacement.

On another note, when tracing links between generations, it'll someday be very interesting that Dilson Herrera once played with Bobby Abreu.

He and Bartolo are Baseball Oracle gold.

Babe Ruth played with Lyn Lary for the 1931 New York Yankees
Lyn Lary played with Bob Feller for the 1937 Cleveland Indians
Bob Feller played with Minnie Minoso for the 1951 Cleveland Indians
Minnie Minoso played with Harold Baines for the 1980 Chicago White Sox
Harold Baines played with Bartolo Colon for the 1999 Cleveland Indians
Bartolo Colon played with Dilson Herrera for the 2014 New York Mets

Babe Ruth played with Ben Chapman for the 1930 New York Yankees
Ben Chapman played with Early Wynn for the 1941 Washington Senators
Early Wynn played with Tommy John for the 1963 Cleveland Indians
Tommy John played with Doug Drabek for the 1986 New York Yankees
Doug Drabek played with Bobby Abreu for the 1996 Houston Astros
Bobby Abreu played with Dilson Herrera for the 2014 New York Mets
