Memories of Scott Atchison

If he hadn't appeared older than dirt, I'm not sure he'd have made a major impression.

Didn't really seem to suck, which is always one of the nicest things one can say about a Mets middle reliever.

I missed seeing him in a rehab appearance as a B-Met in Trenton - I was distracted and didn't pay attention to the pitching change.

Easy to miss and forgettable (aside from G-Fafif's notation that he appeared to be older than any of us who post here).

Wore No. 50, even though his teammate Frank-Frank (No. 48) was theoretically in line to inherit it; and Atchy was a former 48 himself.

(50 was "retired for the fans" in 2012 preventing Double F from his customary uni).

He seemed to me to a reliable, Ricky Bottalico sort. Worth something at least until they get injured.

And boy, you knew he was going to get injured, didn't you? Strained a groin during pre-game warmups, if I'm recalling rightly.

Was re-activated (the second time) on the same day Wheeler got promoted. Must've looked like father and son on that plane.

Old looking Mets who were nonetheless under 40:
Scott Atchison
Roy McMillan
Tom Paciorek
George Stone
Harry Parker
Kelly Shoppach
Ed Kranepool, frankly, by the end

Didn't he, like, reinjure himself warming up in-game?

OE: Yes, yes he did. (On the day he returned from the first DL stint, no less.)

Funny note in that report that Wheeler was sent down when Atchy was re-disabled. Who knew their fates were so linked?

My best memory of him was the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe comment when he was signed.
(IIRC Edgy gets the credit for that one.)

Really? I don't remember that at all. For the 50th anniversary year, I'm assuming.

Atchison was mostly forgettable, unfortunately, except that he looked like one of us. Middle relief is a tough gig.

I think Atchison looks like Tom Seaver: Today.
