Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Strikes me as one of those guys Paul DePodesta thinks of as a stealth prospect, a la Juan Lagares, Climbing through the system with minimum fanfare but has the defensive skills to land now, but brass thinks the offensive ability is in there, if not yet discovered after a year and a half at Bingy.Probably isn't ready (no AAA), but probably as worthy of hope for improvement as Tejada.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 ...as worthy of hope for improvement as Tejada.no need to be insulting.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Turned 22 last month. Played 133 games at Binghamton. .263/.323/.340 with 14 doubles, 4 triples, 4 homers in 486 plate appearances. Stole 12 bases, caught 7 times.Yeah, what the hell. Put him in the mix.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 Rob Castellano is quite bullish on him, and he's not the only guy. There's like a very small cult of Tovar out there.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 If he truly possesses "an extraordinary glove" as the linked piece claims and turns out to be no worse than a contact hitter with low-Ks and little power, it's not like he would be a step down from Tejada.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Only, a step up from Tejada would be nice.Still, I didn't know till today how well regarded this guy's glove was. Nice thing to have I guess.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 And in fairness, a lot of those lynx I provided weren't exactly written yesterday.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Jay Horwitz ?@Jay_HorwitzPR Wilfredo Tovar will become the first Met to wear No.70 tonight in Philly. His family admired former. NYG,MLB Sam Huff, who also wore 70.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Is his father Cesar Tovar???

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 20, 2013 Author Posted September 20, 2013 Named the best defensive infielder in the Mets' system three years running.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 He doesn't hit much for sure...longggshot...
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 20, 2013 Author Posted September 20, 2013 A longshot for what? He's already a big leaguer, jumping from AA, no less, leapfrogging the likes of Hicks, Bixler, and Sandoval. We should all be such longshots.
dinosaur jesus Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Welcome, Tovarisch.

From the way I hear it the guy couldn't eat dinner at a sidewalk cafe in Caracas without being constantly interrupted by fans.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 20, 2013 Author Posted September 20, 2013 I'm sorry to kill you. Let's discuss before you die.Longshot for what? Longshot to ever play again play beyond the next 10 days? Longshot to start regularly? Longshot to be an All Star? Longshot to be included in special edition of baseball cards that make the editors of Beckett Almanac plotz? The median age of ballplayers in AA is 24. The average age of ballplayers in the Eastern League is 24.2 This guy just turned 22 on August 11, so he played most of the season as a 21-year-old. He's been young for his leagues most of his career. And of course, he's not in AA anymore, as he's graduated to the big leagues. So whatever his issues, being too old certainly isn't one of them.

I need a drink..And we all lived!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 20, 2013 Author Posted September 20, 2013 So, you concede the too-old thing, then, and you're not gonna die. Cool on both counts.

Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Getting a better look at this guy on TV, there's no wayhe is 22 years old.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 His face looks a little melty, like a Kiss you left on the car in summertime.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 24, 2013 Author Posted September 24, 2013 It'd be pretty embarrassing, and perhaps a little sketchy, if the Mets under Sandy ended up signing a guy who was misrepresenting his age.
