Maybe it's for the best. Remember, these are the Mets. He probably woulda ended up overthrwowing too many pitches in the freezing cold and then probably ruined his career.

It was all that gushing about "cool customer" and "poise" from Gary and Keith in the last inning. I'm convinced.

And Gary did mention that he was hitless over his last 9 innings counting the last three innings of his outting vs. the Phils. When he said that I cringed a lil.

Up to 100 pitches. Aside from the hit and the 2 walks this has been a perfect game for Harv.

You can actually hear Keith leer when he talks about the kid. It would be a little alarming if I weren't feeling the exact same way right now.

I like this situation. Parnell's first save chance with as big a cushion as possible.

I prefer cushions too big for saves.

Kinda messy offense today except for one inning when the team couldn't be stop't.

Those drives by the Twins don't even reach the wall. It seems every other one of our hits smack off that wall.

Keep it under control Parnell.

What I said last Monday bears repeating here: "Folks, we got ourselves one seriously good pitcher on our hands here".

Terry PH-ing with Valdy and then putting Nieuwenhuis in for CF defense seemed like a waste of a player who maybe, just maybe, would be needed later.
Either PH with Nieuwy or leave Speen in the play CF.

Agreed, but that's just Terry bein Terry. What he's doing with the outfield reminds me of the way Gil platooned the right side of the field (RF,2nd Base, 1st base)in '69. A little bit, anyways.

I have nothing against platooning; Baxter for Duda made absolute sense in this game for instance.
But having already burned Baxter and then using Valdespin for a PH, it didn't make sense to pull Byrd and then use your last remaining OF in Nieuwenhuis (remember that emergency OF Turner was already in a DH). If Terry believes that Nieuwenhuis's defense is that much better than Cowgill and Valdy (questionable) then use him to PH, and if Terry thinks Valdespin was that much more likely to get in the 5th run than Nieuwenhuis then he can survive one inning with him in CF. And remember that this all started because he wanted to go lefty/righty for Cowgill (it's not like we were PH-ing for the pitcher here) so he wound up using three different CFs to cover the final four outs of the game.

IOW, he was over-doing it there at the end IMO

The only entree in the Historic Met journal for 4/13/13: "Buck did not hit one today."

Mebbe, but 'Spin is the better offensive threat at this juncture, and Nieuey the better defender. It's not like the Mets were lookin' down the road at a likely attrition war. This is the American League where those almost never happen anyhow. You can be a little more liberal with your bench usage, and I imagine Terry knows that.

No, you're right. I agree. I think most folks here would too.

op:(on preview?)saw Edges post when hitting enter. Good thing I said most, lol.

I probably agree too, but I see the other side as appealing too. I'm certain I'd agree 100% under real baseball rules.

I disagree. I think Nieuwenhuis is better all around. Hell, I think Baxter is better than both of them anyway, and I'd have rather him in CF.

Well, OK. But Valdespin is out-hitting Nieuwy this year in the bigs. And he out-hit him last year both in the bigs and the mnors.

Baxter was already in the game.
