First semi-big offseason move as Cubs swap closer Marmol to the Angels for starter Dan Haren.

Looks like the Angels save $5 million on the deal and surrender steady if unspectacular starter for a mercurial reliever. I'd guess the Cubs are getting the deal here.

Hell, giving up a great closer to get a decent starter is good business. And Marmol ain't a great closer.

Not only did the deal fall through but the day ended with the Angels simply declining the option they held on Haren making him a free agent.
The team took the $3.5mil buyout rather than go with the $15.5mil option or with what may have been available on the trade market.

With Ervin Santana gone and FAs Haren & Greinke on the open market, the Angels have shaved a ton of money off their 2013 payroll (probably $40 million worth + they're declining the option on Toriiiii Hunter) but also now need to restock most of their rotation.

Geez, I saw it in the Chicago Tribune. Gene Siskel is rolling around in his grave.

Dickey, but only if they take Bay with him.

Flashing back on this thread last night. Haren ended up on Washington and is sporting a 5.70 ERA after 13 starts, so it's hard to say who would have won this one. But we won last night and jerked Marmie's ERA up to 6.08 in the executing.
