Braves have "moved on" from Ryan Dempster according to GM Wren - which may be a good thing for Atlanta seeing as how Dempster has recently broken his run of great games to the tune of 2 losses and 7 earned over 12 innings in 2 games.

Brewers say they "will move" Grienke sometime before Tuesday's deadline.

Milwaukee traded Zack Greinke to Los Angeles Angels for shortstop prospect Jean Segura and a pair of AA right-handers: Johnny Hellweg and Ariel Pena.


Doesn't sound like a blow-away deal but the SS Segura is considered a good prospect, is also just about ready (was actually promoted to the majors earlier this week), and young (22)/good shortstops are tough to find. Between that and two high-minors arms it sounds like the Brewers did OK for themselves here in exchange for a two-month rental. And the extra draft [u:3pv39w2e]pick[/u:3pv39w2e] (no longer pick[u:3pv39w2e]s[/u:3pv39w2e]) that the Brews could have netted had they hung onto him for the rest of the season would likely have been a much longer shot than anything they got in the trade.

i know Scutaro didn't do much in NY, but i liked him at the time and was a little sorry to seem him go. He was one of those scrappy AAAA-type players who hung around long enough to get a shot in the majors, and then the more he played, the better he got. He was like a SuperJoe McEwing (also on the team at the time), but a better hitter. And when compared to Rey Ordonez and Robbie Alomar, i was excited for ANYBODY who would reduce their playing time. He peaked later with Toronto and Boston, and while he didn't really have the range for SS and didn't hit well enough for 2B, he did a bit of everything and seemed like a guy who helped a team, at least a little.

A .270/10hr middle infielder who puts the bat on the ball, catches what he gets to, and plays with some spark, is surely worth something to a winning team. So, good luck to Scooter in SF.

here's why i don't have the same affection for Keppinger, though i totally understand why you or others might:

* he was drafted in middle rounds out of a good college program (unlike Scutaro, who was an undrafted FA);
* he came to the Mets with Kris Benson in a trade that cost us Jose Bautista, Ty Wiggenton and Matt Peterson (unlike Scutaro, who we signed for nothing off the scrap heap);
* he came up to the majors at age 24, with his prime years ahead of him (not 27, like Scooter);
* we later traded him for Ruben Gotay, turning that trade thread into a nightmare (Bautista > Keppinger > Gotay)
* i don't think he ultimately got all he could out of his talents (Scutaro's major league numbers much more closely his minor league numbers; Keppinger was better in the minors)

so Keppy leaves me cold.

I guess this was plan B after Dempster turned them down, but it sounds like they paid a heavy price.

The Phillies have backed up the truck, thrown in the towel and given up the ghost, not necessarily in that order. Victorino to the Dodgers, Pence to the Giants. The Victorino deal is official and the Pence deal is not yet, but he's a goner, reports say.

Pence is signed through 2013, so he's a better get. Victorino is a free agent this fall. Might he be a Met? I have no idea how much money he'll be looking to get.

Hitting the hell out of the ball in the PCL this year, though, and in his 40 PA with Toronto, so he could be a good grab of a guy who might just be blooming late. (And at 24, not as late as all that.)
