Mets P Dillon Gee hospitalized
Updated: July 10, 2012, 11:02 AM ET
By Adam Rubin | ESPNNewYork.com

New York Mets right-hander Dillon Gee has been hospitalized in New York, multiple members of the organization confirmed.

A teammate said the issue was believed to be blood-related in Gee's shoulder. Another member of the organization said Gee was admitted Monday and underwent an MRI, but it was not precisely clear at that point the issue.

Attempts to reach GM Sandy Aldersona and team spokesman Jay Horowitz were unsuccessful.

A woman who answered the phone at Gee's parents' home in Texas said father, Kevin Gee, was en route to New York.

A call to agent Bryan Cahill was not immediately returned.

Gee, 26, is scheduled to pitch the Mets' second-half opener in Atlanta on Friday.

Numbness in his fingers, Terry said.

Let the Harvey Era begin!

With the All Star Break, the Mets can plug in any Buff pitcher that they want. I've already expressed my Harvey feeling, but Batista and Heftista and Schwintista will also be available for your consideration.

Get well, Gee.

Gee was to have started the second half Friday. I would guess that's not a string possibility now.

well let's actually get some real info before diagnosing starts or replacements or what not.

Dickey should start Friday anyway.

run on half sentence. Just mean let's find out what we're actually dealing with before we decide on the solution.

Rubin reporting that Gee will be placed on the disabled list.

Doctors used catheter to break up a blood clot and he will remain in the hospital for a few days for observation.

Not on us to decide the solution anyhow, but you have to figure if Gee misses some time they'll look for a replacement in Buffalo. I suppose they could decide on Hef if it's a short-term thing, and maybe Harvey if it's longer. I don't need no more Schwinny.

I think Gee's done an okay job holding down the back end for now but I think he's going to have a hard time fighting off Harvey and Wheeler sooner or later.

I agree. Assuming they both join the Mets rotation within the next year or two, I think that one of them will probably displace Young, and the other, depending on how things go, would displace Gee or Santana.

Gee's done a very good job for a 5th guy, (4th, whatever you want) imo. 4.1 ERA is pretty good.

But yeah, way too much missing info to determine what they do. Even with a minimum DL stint they could get by with only one start from a 6th SP guy. 40 man's full, but Alderson hinted at a bunch of moves coming internally, so some DFA might be in order .

yeah, seems no timetable, clot in artery of pitching shoulder. I'm not sure they're a large subset of data to draw on, baseball wise, on what that means towards mechanics and pitching and what not.

Wonder if they go conservatively here and expect him back. I wonder if Sandy considers bringing in a starter too. Didn't seem like it, but you can never have too many starters.

Mixed in with this is that they've already pushed Santana back to at least Sunday - or maybe to the Nats series next week - due to the ankle that got stepped on in his last start.

Rubin/ESPN now reporting that Gee "has had surgery" to break up a blood clot and will remain in the hospital for the next "day or two".

Perhaps this thread should merge with the "Poll: Starter Next" thread as they are each now discussing the rotation.

I'm not mixing my great thread title with that yoda-talk in the other thread. "Starter Next"? What is this, Canada?

A little context please... a 4.1 ERA isn't what it was in the steroid era. Currently, that's good for a 92 ERA+, which ain't that good. Now as a #5, its certainly adequate, but he's obviously replaceable if necessary.

sorry, context:

4.1 ((compared to the 3.97 league average) ) is pretty good for a team that scores 4.58 a game. Especially when the immediate replacements are not likely to put up numbers even approaching that.

Schwinnie (11.25 ERA in 8 IP), Hef (6.89 in 18), and Batista (4.00 in 15.67) have collectively put up a 6.48 ERA in 41.67 innings.

Didn't David Cone have something similar?

Cone's problem was an aneurysm, an enlargement of the artery that can burst if not caught and which is sometimes accompanied by a clot forming in that enlargement. That's a much longer rehab period since the artery needs to be cut and then given time to mend itself.
Gee's procedure apparently was an internal breaking up of the clot without having to slice and stitch the blood vessel.

The article in the Daily News about Gee today had a sidebox showing Gee's stats for 2012. It was titled, "WHO GETS THE ROCK?"

I have no idea what that means.

The News wants you to propose to it.

Interesting. In 42 years as a baseball fan, I don't think I've ever heard that one before.

That's because it's a basketball term.
