Mets decide to use the Tampa airport rather than West Palm Beach to fly back to NY. The worthless storyline here is that Andy Pettite may pitch an inning.

Torres-DH, Murphy-2B, Wright-3B, Davis-1B, Bay-LF, Duda-RF, Hairston-CF, Thole-C, Tejada-SS. Gee-RHP

Goose says Pettite will pitch because the Boss would have demanded it , he was a winner you see and loved the way Andy peaked from under his cap and over his glove when he was bearing down on the hated Mets.

GKR politely showed their displeasure for this game. It doesn't impact them--it's not on SNY--but why are the Mets schlepping to Tampa for a practice game the day before the season starts? They should be having a workout at home so the players can see the new configuration. I know that a practice field Port St. Lucie has the same configuration but it would be better to see the real thing. Of course, money is involved--they had a sellout yesterday--but it was still a bad decision.

Francesa harped on this yesterday. Among other ridiculous things. For one, the Mets are doing the _Yankees_ a favor yesterday, not the other way around. They wanted a pitstop on the way back from Miami.

I doubt the Mets were ever planning on holding a workout today. If it wasn't the Yankees, it'd be the Nats or something. Most of the other teams are playing various games, it's not like they're chilling out. They had the new dimensions set up on field 7 down there, what do they really need to practice? The wall is a little closer, so take a couple of steps in. bingo. They can walk around and shag fly balls Thursday morning during BP, but I don't think anyone really felt this was something that needed to be done.

Baseball is also a game that's played every day. I think it's important from that aspect to gear up for another game in a row today, followed by one tomorrow. Travel is normal in that case. (And they have off Friday) try to get into a routine and groove and all that.

btw, it's an hour to the airport anyway, it's only three hours to Tampa airport. They gotta get on a bus anyway, so is a noon game really a big deal? They'll be in NY in time for a late dinner.

Yeah , chartered flight I bet , no sitting around at the airport , first class and all that jazz. They'll be fine.

This game was scheduled months ago. Strikes me as as a reporter cranky about his own travel obligations. Waaa.

Well the WFAN people, Francessa and the morning show, complained about it too. But they're cranky and ignorant, so that doesn't surprise.

Oh, and with both teams fielding cromulent squads, the Mets led 3-1 on an Ike Davis homer in the third. Dillon Gee has held the mighty Bombers to a single run through five, on four hits, one walk, and five strikeouts.

Sign him to an extension.

Both teams have being emptying the bench. Cory Vaughn's in the house. Darrell Cecliani. Tovar's back. Some guy named Richard Lucas has taken over first base for Ike. We are the Lucasiest team in the business, you know that?

That's Lucas with his lid off.

Five runs in the ninth yielded by Angel Cuan, shortstop Danny Muno, and thirdbaseman Ryan Sandoval. None were charged to late-entry (and Edgy adoptee) John Church, but he let several score after inheriting them.
