Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Wasn't there a season somewhere around 1980 where the Mets had very very few homers by a catcher?

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 29, 2012 Author Posted August 29, 2012 Zero in 1980. John Stearns hurt his elbow, and only got a half year in, and in the games he did get into, he didn't get any loft on the ball. Alex Trevio, Ron Hodges, and Butch Benton, given a chance to pick him up, didn't.All that would have been awful on it's own, but what really sealed it was that they didn't get any homers from any of their shorstops or secondbasemen that year either. They totaled a Marisesque 61 --- almost all of those coming from the outfield.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Ron Hodges' homer in 1984 came as a pinch hitter.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Home runs hit, by position, in 1980. There are a few cases where a player played more than one outfield position in a game in which he homered. I neglected to determine which position he was playing at the time he hit the home run. Either way, we have 16 homers from the infield, 41 from the outfield, and 4 from pinch hitters.1b Jorgensen Mike 31b Mazzilli Lee 63b Brooks Hubie 13b Maddox Elliott 43b Moreno Jos 13b Youngblood Joel 1cf Jorgensen Mike 1cf Mazzilli Lee 10cf Morales Jerry 3cf Youngblood Joel 2cf-rf Youngblood Joel 1lf Henderson Steve 7lf Washington Claudell 2lf-rf Washington Claudell 1ph Henderson Steve 1ph Moreno Jos 1ph Norman Dan 2rf Jorgensen Mike 3rf Washington Claudell 6rf Youngblood Joel 4rf-lf Washington Claudell 1
