Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2011 Author Posted August 10, 2011 Five days to the signing deadline and no word on Nimmo.Of course there's nothing unusual about that as even the 1st rounders who agree to something early usually don't sign and announce until the last minute because MLB is afraid that if it's an above-slot signing then other players/agents will use that price to drive up their price. Best to keep everyone ignorant (or so the thinking goes).Only 1/3 or so of the 1st rounders have signed and most of them from the back end. Front end HS players generally sign late.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2011 Author Posted August 15, 2011 Mike Puma sez:The Mets are confident their No. 1 pick, Brandon Nimmo, will be locked up by tonight's midnight deadline for signing draft choices, but the 18-year-old outfielder's father isn't so sure.Ron Nimmo told The Post yesterday that significant progress in contract talks still has to be made between the Mets and his son. He called the $2.5 million figure that has been floated "a good number for discussion purposes," but indicated the asking price is a different figure. If the Mets and Nimmo don't strike a deal, the player will enroll in classes at Arkansas next Monday, according to the elder Nimmo."[The Mets] have some work to do," Ron Nimmo said. "There's some disparity."It's not all about the money. You get one shot at this deal and you're going to have to live off this for six years."I'd be extremely surprised if he doesn't sign.As of this morning 23 of the 33 first-round picks are still negotiating as are 11 of 27 supplemental first-rounders and nearly one third (98 of 331) of those selected in the first 10 rounds. Of course many of these guys have actually agreed to terms but are keeping mum under orders from MLB until those deals will be announced at some point today. The consensus is that all but maybe two of the first-rounders will sign before the midnight deadline.

Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Round 16 guy, Bradley Marquez (not Brandon apparently) signed with Mets:Red Raiders Marquez signs contract with MetsBy Don Williams on August 14th, 2011 No Comments Printer-FriendlyTexas Tech football player Bradley Marquez on Sunday signed a contract to play pro baseball with the New York Mets and announced plans to continue pursuing both sports.Marquez signed a three-year contract, according to his agents with Xclusive Sports Management in Houston. They declined to release other details of the deal.Marquez, a freshman wide receiver from Odessa, was a standout shortstop in high school. The Mets took him in the 16th round of the June draft.Coming from West Texas, nobody really expects somebody to play pro baseball simply because West Texas is all about their football, but I am blessed to be able to play both college football and pro baseball, Marquez said in a statement released by his agents. Its something a lot of people dont get the chance to do, and Im blessed to have this opportunity and play for a great college as well as a great baseball organization in the New York Mets. Simply the best of both worlds. On the Red Raiders Aug. 5 reporting day, Marquez said he wanted to play both, whether it was football and baseball for Tech or football for Tech and baseball for a pro team. To accomplish the latter, he was working against MLBs signing deadline of 11 p.m. Monday.I think all the time Bradley did expect to get it done, his agent, Kyle Dison, said. He wanted to get it done.Dison said going into August to work out the contract wasnt unexpected considering Marquezs two-sport preference. When (the contract) is spread over three years like that, it just takes a lot of time to do, Dison said. Everything had to be cleared through the university, the compliance office, as well as Major League Baseball.Marquez will be at Tech during the school year and report to the Mets spring-training facilities in Port St. Lucie, Fla., in May.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Confession: I have no idea what "boudin" is.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 It's a cajun-style sausage. Verrett is from Corpus Christie I believe, I think they eat that stuff there.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Yep-- primarily a Southwest-Louisiana/Southeastern-Texas thing. They sell 'em like veryone seems to have a home recipe down there.Your colon hasn't lived until you've had gas-station sausage for breakfast.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 $650K-- highest bonus ever paid by the Mets outside the first two rounds-- brings home 15th-rounder/uberathletic schoolboy SS Phillip Evans.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2011 Author Posted August 15, 2011 A 10:35 update from MLB.com:There's just over an hour to go and there's still no official movement at the top of the Draft board. All eight of the top 10 picks remain unsigned as do all 23 of the first-rounders (out of 33 total) who began the day on the board. Some deals might be done but not announced yet, while some teams are starting to negotiate in earnest now. It's going to be an extremely chaotic final hour, going right up to 12:01 a.m. ET for sure. The good thing about the late game tonight is that we might get an update from Gary & Ron.It's also possible that some of these last minute deals will officially get in before the midnight deadline but not get announced for several hours later.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Heyman said things were "closer"... 15-20 minutes ago.I wonder... who has the official clock on the deadline? Do the GMs all synch their watches/cells/Berrys at the Winter Meetings to the lobby clock?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Is there a page running in and out of the negotiating room fetching water and canapes and giving the pressmen updates?
