At 2,829 hits and counting, and starting (and more-or-less deserving to start) just under half the Nats' games this season, will he be the first catcher to 3,000 hits?

Currently at .214 / .241 / .321 // .563 and that's not going to get him across the finish line by the end of 2012.

I'd say there's a 50/50 chance he gets a Mets check before it's all over.

Ramos has been playing a lot better than pudge, so i don't see him getting enough starts to get to 3k. I could maybe see him getting a small contract next year to get to 3k.... He'll have to play for an NL club, and maybe have a young catcher that's starting that he could offer to help coach/etc...

my other question though is how many of those hits came with him playing dh? or some other position that's not catcher? it's kinda like piazza's home run record, he has 400+ hr's, but i think like 399 came as a catcher...

Pudge has 2829 hits; 2735 were as a catcher. 66 as DH, 8 as 1B and 20 as PH.

Piazza has 427 homers; 396 as a catcher.

wow. thanks for the leg work there. I'm assuming that pudge cares more for just hitting 3k vs 3k as a catcher.

While "most home runs by a catcher" and occasional other positional record forays have come up, I don't think I've ever heard hits divided up by position. 3,000 hits would be 3,000 hits, and a large percentage by a catcher would be pretty impressive, even if Pudge won't have worn shin guards while running to first on a single one of the them.
