Dodger-Lovin' Big Shot Kareem Abdul-Jabbar calls out one of baseball's Horrible Bosses, Frank McCourt. Entertaining rant, though for a kid whose team abandoned him when he was 10 years old -- and for a kid who got a new team in his neighborhood as a fifteenth birthday present -- too bad he never made the switch to MLBS.

In any event, he and Fred must have a lot to talk about.

I often wonder how this would have played out if the Dodgers were still in the borough of Brooklyn. My guess is Brooklynites would have thrown the perpetrators of this type of farce out on their ears. I wondered the same thing, actually, when the Steve Bartman incident happened in Wrigley Field a few years back. You'll recall that he interfered with a foul ball that the Cubs' left fielder was trying to catch for a crucial out, an incident that very well might have changed the outcome of that 2003 playoff game. Would Bartman have made it out of the stands alive if that had happened in Ebbets Field?

Brooklyn fans could be tough.

On Real Time With Bill Maher, Bill Maher asked Mark Cuban to please buy the Mets because "I'm still a Mets fan." Cuban responded he's a Pirates fan, how sad is that?

On the night his team went into first place.

I know hundreds of my Facebook friends want me to join in with them in celebrating the work of Bill Maher because, dammit, he zings Republicans, but he's insufferrable.

Waiting in the courthouse to destify against my designated face puncher, I was surrounded by MPD officers waiting to testify in 10 different courtrooms. Many were in uniform, but a handful were in plainclothes. The baseball jersey count included one Nats, one Orioles, and two Mets --- a black home jersey and a classick road gray.

Neither had any numbers on the front, and cops never show you their backs, apparently even when surrounded by other cops.

No point-and-thumbs-up?

I tried to get one cop's attention, but failed.

I figured that they didn't even know what they were wearing --- that Thursday was "Mets Day," as in "We have all our undercover boys in Mets jerseys today, men. For God's sake, if you think you have a perp, but he has a Mets jersey, he's probably one of ours. It could be an actual Met, but I just heard that they traded Rodriguez, so don't count on that."

More on the Hoodoo Gurus' affection for the Mets from a recent fb post from Faulkner:

I went to my first MLB game at Yankee Stadium in when I was 21 years old (!). It was versus Texas Rangers and I remember that Dale Berra was playing for Texas. We bought scalped tickets outside and were seated behind home plate (not bad!). My american friend explained the finer points of the strategies to me as we watched and I was pretty much hooked. As I got more knowledgeable I came to favour the National League (I'm not a fan of the DH rule) and as NYC was my home-away-from-home I chose the Mets. Never regretted it for a moment, despite the frequent heartbreak.

I know he was already mentioned in this thread, in the opening post, but it's time to mention Chris Christie again now that he may* be flirting with the idea of becoming the biggest Met-loving bigshot of all.

* Me, I don't think he'll take the plunge. But I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

Christie not running. Let's not ever mention him again.

-- Christopher Meloni, late of "Law and Order: SVU"-- a closing day attendee, witnessed with mine own eyes.

-- A more palatable gubernatorial fan for some of youse... sorta.

Q: Mets or Yankees and favorite overall sport?

A: Mets, football.

-- A Jersey kid who may grow much, much bigger in my estimation by night's end.

West Orange's Rick Porcello doesn't know how it happened. His parents were Yankees fans. They would even let him skip one day of school per year to go to the old Yankee Stadium, but for some reason he became a Mets fan.

"I guess when I was pretty much old enough to start following baseball and really be in touch with the players was right around the 2000 [Mets] team and they went to the World Series," the 22-year-old Porcello said. "I just rooted for them. I always liked the fact that they were kind of more of an underdog in New York."

Rainn Wilson

Talking religion:

He was convinced he wanted a religion that had something similar to the Great Spirit of Wonka Tonka, a deity of Native Americans. While watching a Mets game, Wilson and a friend prayed to Wonka Tonka that former Mets outfielder Darryl Strawberry would hit a home run to win the game.

And he did.

True story. Not making it up, Wilson said.
