Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 The upside on Young is that signing him makes it increasingly untenable for Ollie Perez to stick around.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 The New York Mets are closing in on a deal with free-agent right-hander Chris Young, a source within the organization told ESPNNewYork.com.Young, 31, made three September starts for the San Diego Padres last season, after missing most of the season with a strained right shoulder. The deal will not be completed until the Mets are satisfied with Young's physical.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 If I'm not mistaken, they'll need the physical period to open up some room on the roster. It looks from my perspective like Pat Misch or Luis Hernandez is going to be sucking down some waiver juice.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 According to the ESPN radio 10 PM update, John Heyman has reported the (conditional) signing. Fill in your John Heyman credibility comments here.Later
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Reported by AP this morning.Seriously, I see no path for Ollie Perez to stick around past Spring Training.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I don't see a path but I do see a yellow brick road lined with $12 million .If he has a good ST maybe someone will take him with the Mets eating a large amount of that money, I just don't see them eating all of it, if they can even get a team to take on a few million then that's something.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Oliver Perez has no trade value, but Oliver Perez plus $11.5 million certainly should.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Benjamin Grimm wrote:Oliver Perez has no trade value, but Oliver Perez plus $11.5 million certainly should. No it won't. the Mets have 41 guys for a 40 man roster, and everyone know the Mets want him off the team. Why give the Mets anything if you can have him April 1st for free? well, not for free. I guess it might be worth giving the Mets a crap MI filler not to ahve to have Boras tell you you should give him more than league minimum?
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I wish I had more confidence in Young, but I get the feeling he's not going to be very good. He missed the season that was supposed to be his bounce back season. Kind of mysterious shoulder injuries and decreased velocity...not good signs. I'd love if he were to work out, but I'm not that optimistic.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Understood, and considering the magnitude of his size, any impingment on his motion can have a devastating effect on his mechanics. But at that price, I'll consider a 50% chance of him becoming a solid, stable part of the rotation as a good deal.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I think the odds are fairly good that either Capuano or Young will be able to start 20 or more games. Signing both of them is better than just signing one of them. (The eggs/basket thing.)

So that bridges that gap, and maybe someone in Buffalo shows something to fill in when the other gets hurt.

I've mentally assigned K-Rod Santana's spot, who likely can be transferred to the 60 day DL the same time Frankie needs to be activated.

Capuano received a base salary of $1.5 million and can approach the maximum if he throws 200 innings and makes 32 starts.Sources said that Young's incentives are a bit easier to reach.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Whoa. Are they gonna have a press conference and jersey-try-on and everything? I don't think they've had one of those this year other than Collins.I think maybe they should with Young, Capuano, Paulino, etc.

So the real news would be the cooresponding move.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Gotta get Hu in on that press conference, just to keep the Asian Times at bay.Yeah, I await an announcement of a correllative waiver move.
