The New York Mets are closing in on a deal with free-agent right-hander Chris Young, a source within the organization told ESPNNewYork.com.
Young, 31, made three September starts for the San Diego Padres last season, after missing most of the season with a strained right shoulder.
The deal will not be completed until the Mets are satisfied with Young's physical.

Sources reported late Monday that although Young had turned his head, he had yet to cough.

If I'm not mistaken, they'll need the physical period to open up some room on the roster. It looks from my perspective like Pat Misch or Luis Hernandez is going to be sucking down some waiver juice.

According to the ESPN radio 10 PM update, John Heyman has reported the (conditional) signing.

I don't see a path but I do see a yellow brick road lined with $12 million .

If he has a good ST maybe someone will take him with the Mets eating a large amount of that money, I just don't see them eating all of it, if they can even get a team to take on a few million then that's something.

No it won't. the Mets have 41 guys for a 40 man roster, and everyone know the Mets want him off the team. Why give the Mets anything if you can have him April 1st for free?

well, not for free. I guess it might be worth giving the Mets a crap MI filler not to ahve to have Boras tell you you should give him more than league minimum?

I wish I had more confidence in Young, but I get the feeling he's not going to be very good. He missed the season that was supposed to be his bounce back season. Kind of mysterious shoulder injuries and decreased velocity...not good signs.

I'd love if he were to work out, but I'm not that optimistic.

Understood, and considering the magnitude of his size, any impingment on his motion can have a devastating effect on his mechanics.

But at that price, I'll consider a 50% chance of him becoming a solid, stable part of the rotation as a good deal.

I think the odds are fairly good that either Capuano or Young will be able to start 20 or more games. Signing both of them is better than just signing one of them. (The eggs/basket thing.)

And the hope is that Santana will be back for the last 12-15. So that bridges that gap, and maybe someone in Buffalo shows something to fill in when the other gets hurt.

do the 41 guys include krod? because he's still in the disqualified list. not on the 40 man.
that'll be another person that needs to leave assuming that krod gets back on the 40 man on opnening day which is to be expected.

no, K-Rod would be 42. I've mentally assigned K-Rod Santana's spot, who likely can be transferred to the 60 day DL the same time Frankie needs to be activated.

It's official:

Adam Rubin wrote:
Chris Young passed his physical with the New York Mets on Thursday, clearing the way for him to sign his one-year deal with the team.

The Mets are scheduled to announce the deal with the right-handed starter at 1 p.m. ET.

Sources say that Young can earn up to $4.5 million if he reaches all his incentives, a deal similar to the one left-hander Chris Capuano signed, sources said. Capuano received a base salary of $1.5 million and can approach the maximum if he throws 200 innings and makes 32 starts.

Sources said that Young's incentives are a bit easier to reach.

Whoa. Are they gonna have a press conference and jersey-try-on and everything? I don't think they've had one of those this year other than Collins.

I think maybe they should with Young, Capuano, Paulino, etc.

Once a deal is 'official' do they have to 'officially' add him to the 40 man roster? So the real news would be the cooresponding move.

Gotta get Hu in on that press conference, just to keep the Asian Times at bay.

Yeah, I await an announcement of a correllative waiver move.

I want to read Asian lady's exclusive interview with Hu.

AL - "What will you do to bring more Asian players to the Mets?"
CLH - "That's the job of the general manager. I just play baseball."
