Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Longtime A's pitching coach Curt Young cuts his ties there and is being interviewed by the Sawx to replace Farrell, who headed up to the Jays.Always nice when pitchers are taken seriously as managerial candidates.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Just heard on WFAN update that Bobby V is a finalist for the Milwaukee managerial spot. Also, earlier today on ESPN radio I heard Curt Schilling say that the new Jays manager, Farrell, is (close paraphrase) "One of the smartest baseball men I've ever met. He is a sure-fire future GM."Later

Haudricourt is currently trying to confirm the story Yesterday, FOXSports' Ken Rosenthal said, Keep hearing Bobby Valentine is finalis for the Brewers. But would Brewers pay V? And would he go?. Valentine has managed in the Majors for 15 years, eight with the Rangers and seven with the Mets. He won the NL pennant in 2000 with the Mets, but failed to win the World Series against the Yankees w

Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Not so fass, muh frens:@SI_JonHeyman: bobby valentine and brewers do not have agreement yet. if they get it done, will be a major coup for the #crew.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 According to a source inside the Milwaukee Brewers organization, the team has agreed in principle with former Mets manager Bobby Valentine to become the teams next manager. Now the two sides must finalize a contract agreement. The source says Valentine is looking for $10-million over 3-years which may or may not throw a wrench into the deal.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/105883573.htmlValentine: No contract talksBy Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel Oct. 27, 2010 1:00 p.m. |(23) CommentsI just made contact with Bobby Valentine to see if he would confirm the Wisconsin Radio Network report that he has an agreement in place with the Brewers and the contract details are to be worked out. This was his response:"There has been no conversation about a contract with your team. Not one word has been mentioned to me and I have not mentioned to anyone there about a contract."I sent Valentine another text to ask if he is in talks with the Brewers about the job and this was his response:"We had a meeting."So, it's obvious that the Brewers have talked to Valentine about the job. It became apparent over the last 24 hours that Valentine was one of the four finalists that GM Doug Melvin mentioned recently. I know for sure that Bob Melvin and Joey Cora are in that group, and I suspect that Ron Roenicke completes the final four.Bill Scott's WRN report said Valentine was seeking a three-year, $10 million deal. Don't know if the Brewers would go that high and it's hard to imagine an agreement being in place without the money being settled. And, according to Valentine, there have been no contract talks.I got no response from Valentine when I asked if he has been offered the job so there's a distinct possibility that the process has begun to see if a deal can be worked out. That's all I know for now. I will try to get more information as the day progresses.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Yanx & Girardi near a three-year deal acc. to various sources.Total contract value expected to be between 9 & 10 mil - which is interesting only in the way it might affect the Valentine/Brewers negotiations. Can Bobby realistically - after being out MLB for so long - expect higher pay than one coming off two straight playoff appearances including one championship, and is Milwaukee the type of team that would pay it? That's all assuming the reports of his demands in the neighborhood of 3/10 are accurate.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Remaining teams needing managers:Milwaukee -- Bobby? and if not him have already interviewed several others including Joey Cora & Bob MelvinMarlins -- I'm assuming they're likely to re-hire their interim from last seasonRangers -- Almost certain to re-up Mr. WashingtonYanx -- Will have Girardi re-signed before the week is out... which leaves the Mets & Pittsburgh to fight it out over whoever is remaining.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 At last report, the Marlins had not interviewed norreportedly made initial contact with anybody. Bo Porter and Edwin Rodriguez are the only confirmed candidates. Now, other reports say Valentine received and rejected an offer from them for the second time this year, so take it as you will.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 2, 2010 Author Posted November 2, 2010 Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times just tweeted that sources are saying that Brewers have hired Ron Roenicke to be their new manager.Cowley covers the White Sox, not the Brewers, but Chicago bench coach Joey Cora was in the mix for the Milwaukee job.Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel passed along Cowleys report and added: I have reason to believe he is correct.Roenicke managed in the minors and has served as the Angels bench coach since 2006, when he took over the job after Mike Scioscias former right-hand man, Joe Maddon, left to manage the Rays.Several previous reports had Bobby Valentine as the front-runner for the Milwaukee job, but apparently much like with the Marlins during the season his Brewers courtship broke down somewhere along the line.UPDATE: Haudricourt has confirmed the news.

TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 I can live with Bobby not managing the Mets, but having him managing a team 72 miles down the road would have made my head explode.I'm glad Milwaukee went with Roenicke.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 I guess you would have had to move another five or ten miles further away from Miller Park.
