Bobby V interviewed by Toronto today, will be interviewed by Seattle and Florida Marlins too, he's getting hired somewhere and it's not looking like Flushing.

I never really thought there was much chance of that. (But until he actually gets hired elsewhere it will continue to be a possibility.)

Toronto would be cool, he would remain an MFY enemy.

He won't go to T-dot. What's more, he won't commit to a new club until he assess the Mets interest.

I certainly wouldn't think it to be the end of the world if he gets the Mets gig.(my word Seo mixes a nice Margarita)

And apparently it's official.

It was written in stone that he was going there, a good hire all the same.

ESPN: Bobby V withdraws name from Marlins

BY MATTHEW CERRONE ON OCT 13, 2010, 6:55 PM

Bobby Valentine confirmed Wednesday that he has taken himself out of consideration for the Marlins managing job for 2011, reports Tim Kurkjian of ESPN.com.

Original Post at 1:59 pm:

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, ?The Mets appear to be a distant third or (fourth) on a list of possible destinations for Bobby Valentine, who interviewed with the Mariners earlier this week.

This is frustrating. I know. Im dying for the Mets to get the show on the road here. The sooner there is a new GM, the sooner there will be a new manager, and the sooner we can start talking players, transactions and ways to make this team better for 2011 and beyond.

I was told earlier today, by someone familiar with these processes, that some candidates arrive to these interviews, like the Mets are conducting this week, usually having a list of people he or she might consider for manager, with some candidates often coming from the minor league system of their current team. And so, for instance, perhaps Rick Hahn likes someone from the White Sox farm who you and I have never heard of, and so he isnt appearing in Heymans columns.

To learn about other names being mentioned in connection to vacant managerial jobs around the league, be sure to check out Heymans report.

According to Tweets, Cubs are signing Quade to a two-year deal.

Question: Is a team better off not hiring a name-brand institutional legend like Sandberg to manage, under the notion that it damages the brand if you get to the point where you have to fire him?

Managers who were legends (or near-legends) as players for the team they eventually managed*:
Alan Trammell
Walter Johnson
Pete Rose
Yogi Berra
Lou Boudreau
Tyrus Cobb
Mickey Cochrane
Joe Cronin

I'm reaching back for a lot of these. It seems that teams are little shyer in modern times.

By the way, reports have Sandy Alomar, Jr. getting a third (?!) interview.

* This is off the top of my head, and nowhere near a comprehensive list.

Cubs name Quade manager (AP)
The Chicago Cubs picked Mike Quade as their new manager Tuesday, choosing to go with the guy who ran the team well for the last six weeks of last season rather than a higher-profile name. The 53-year-old Quade, the team's third base coach the past four years, was given a two-year contract and there's a club option for 2013.

Whither Ryne Sandberg?

Sandberg, to his credit, isn't just demanding the job based on past greatness as he's been doing to minor league thing in the Cubs' system and will probably be considered ML managing material by someone in the near future, especially now that he's not in Chicago's plans for the next few years. Sounds like this could be the end of the road for him with them.

Bud Harrelson. OK, not quite a "legend", but a popular and long-time player.
That one didn't end well either.

oe: This also kills any Girardi to the Cubs speculation - something that was never anything more than speculation but had apparently gained steam over the past few days via the FBPSA (Fanboi Press Scoop Assoc).

Yeah, but I'm trying to distinguish well-respected organizational men/championship contributors like Harrelson and Bowa and Bill F. Russell from brand-defining guys like Ripken and Seaver and Williams and DiMaggio. It's a lot easier to fire Bud Harrelson than Tom Seaver. And it would be a lot harder to fire Cal Ripken than it was to axe his dad.

And surely that feeds into the the thinking of both the player and the team.

you'd have to think washington's getting re-hired. I think bluejays mightn't be primetime enough for bobby v and hopefully he's pissed off enough at the marlins not to bother going there.
Would any new GM have enough balls to take Bobby V on?
