He also swung on at least four pitches that were about a foot out of the strike zone. This is all a part of Jerry's reverse platoon where the manager tries to get the worst out of his ballplayers.

But otherwise, Santana's a good enough and smart enough pitcher to keep the ball away from the guy with the bases empty. That one is on Santana. (And I guess Thole, to a small extent.)
