Found this item today:

"Ben Sheets to have both Tommy John and flexor tendon surgery. SF Chron reports 1.5 year recovery but one has to wonder about his career. Kinda sad."

Ouch!

Yeah there were a lot of calls for Omar to sign Sheets ... at some really favorable price. Problem is that wasn't going to happen as long as just one team thought he was worth more.
Once he did sign, everyone figured Beane in Oakland would either use Sheets if the A's got into a playoff run or, failing that, deal him at the deadline for younger goodies. But Sheets wasn't very good this year from the very beginning and hasn't been right for a while now.

What makes things even worse is that most of Sheets' earlier problems were shoulder related IIRC so this elbow thing just throws a whole 'nother wrench into the works.
Winter 2011/12 is the next we'll hear from him, if at all.

He's only 31...I would have guessed older.

A healthy Sheets has always been an elite pitcher...but he's been off and on the DL for years now.

A definite demerit on Beane's record, though.

i don't think its a "demerit"... he was smart to give him one year knowing he wouldnt be stuck if it didnt work out (see: oliver perez). i liked the Moises Alou contract for the same reason... its hard to go wrong on a one year deal for a guy who is proven to be good when healthy

Guilty. (Low-ish plus incentives.)

Let's sign him then! Low base-incentive-laden deal, of course.

lets sign him this offseason when nobody wants him... league minimum for 3 years, with innings pitched incentives for 2012 and 2013 worth lots of money
