Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 certainly seems that Jerry's preparing Frenchy for a platoon lately.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Not that there's anything wrong with that.[/quote:kicqiqsh]Agreed, but I was worried Manuel didn't realize how bad Frenchy is. I'm sure I'll still get annoyed that he plays too much and Pagan not enough, but we'll see.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 He sure rides his front-line players hard, though, don't he? I mean, it's 100 degrees out there.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2010 Author Posted July 7, 2010 Ask Ralph Kiner if they should get a day-off. They can sleep late tomorrow.

Davis is from Arizona. he laughs in the face of blazing heat.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Two things I wonder about Josh Thole:1. Is he about to be traded for a starting pitcher?2. Is he about to claim the Mets starting catcher job?

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I'd say one was more likely than two , he hasn't really played enough to claim a starting job has he?, of course that might need to change to get #1 going.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Two things I wonder about Josh Thole:1. Is he about to be traded for a starting pitcher?2. Is he about to claim the Mets starting catcher job?Nice hitter innit he? I mean, what little we've seen.I think the Mets are way too in love with the veteran-ness and defensive reputation of the Barajas/Blanco platoon to break it up so I think Thole's best shot this year is to force the issue of being a LH bat, like he's been doing, but he's still up against it. I'd be surprised if he's still in the org in three weeks.I dunno if you saw it but Jerry criticized Jauss for allowing Thole to PH vs. a lefty the other night after Jerry's ejection, that may give you an idea of where the org is on him.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I criticized Jauss also, for what it's worth.

That confuses me actually. I was at the game and was surprised to see Thole against the lefty (because i assumed Jerry was still calling the shots anyway). I did realize that Tatis is on the DL and they don't have a lot of righty's on the bench. (Frenchy to assume this role I assume) but could've used Blanco in that situation..unless Jerry was serious about the whole "Blanco is the backup CI" thing..which actually casts a rather pale light on Carter.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 What surprised me in reading that was that Manuel even though he was kicked out was still not manageing the game, I assumed that was what happened. Booby V used to right?
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2010 Author Posted July 7, 2010 Wondering: can a team afford a catcher w/no power (minor league high: 5)?
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Wondering: can a team afford a catcher w/no power (minor league high: 5)?[/quote:2rkbbfeu]He could develop some maybe. If he's going to put up a higher average than most catchers, maybe you live with a couple less dingers, but while Thole does look like he might be a quality hitter, he also doesn't look like anything irreplaceable.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Power is like any other skill. A defecit in one department can be cancelled by a surfeit in another. And just playing catcher goes a long ways toward that cancellation.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Paul LoDuca wasn't much of a power hitter, and the Mets won a division with him.Neither was Jerry Grote, but that was a whole different era.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 ESPN game tonight for the out-of-towners with the added bonus of Bobby V at the mike ... along with Chris Berman and Joe Morgan - you can't have everything you know
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Wondering: can a team afford a catcher w/no power (minor league high: 5)?[/quote:1z5ennxu]The problem with Thole is that his offensive worth is pretty much tied up in BA as he has little power and doesn't walk a ton.And the problem with that is BA tends to fluctuate more than most stats and Mets fans shouldn't count on him being the .300+ hit machine they saw last year in AAA and briefly w/the big club. That doesn't mean he's the .200 hitter he started out this year as either but the truth probably lies somewhere in between.Combine all that with the fact that he's probably never going to make a team on defensive rep alone and I think he may just be a back-up/fill-in/platoon guy much of his career.
