Nothing against Larchmont in particular, or Westchester and Fairfield counties in general, but I find it odd how many Mets choose that area to live considering it's a bunch of miles and bridges away.
Seems to me that if I worked in northern Queens and money was little or no object there are equally well-off and isolated towns on the north shore of Nassau county that I'd opt for just to cut down on the commute if nothing else. That's what many on those '80s teams did - some even used to take the train line that runs right to Shea/CF - but, to my knowledge, only Beltran lives there now.

I think, and this is just my own observations, that a lot of LI has really become overcrowded and plenty of it from property taxes and what not compares to NYC, and I suspect a lot of guys that come from out of state and whose families are looking for a little slower paced, quieter areas opt for other states. (Not that some of those quiet towns up on the north shore don't offer that, but I suspect they've lost some of their allure as well, a couple of decades more removed from Great Gatsby)

Despite money being no object, most of these guys still think about these things. Even Super Awesome God Among Men Class-Act Derek Jeter maintained a house in Florida mainly to try to cheat NYS out of income tax.

Speaking of someone who moved from Long Island (although an average town on the South Shore, not up north) to NJ I do find things better here, with the exception of the stupid bridge tolls to get to Citi.

Jeter's done more than maintain a house in Florida. He's widely reported to be building the mother of all obnoxious nouveau rich mansions.

i'm in New Rochelle, which is 1 town over from Larchmont. It takes 20m to get to CitiField from here. Your not going to get a nicer area much closer than that on LI. I remember some Mets used to live in Port Washington, which is a similarly monied town on the north shore, but its not really any closer.

Vic, how are the schools in New Rochelle? And how long is that commute to the city?

New Rochelle seems like a nice town, we go to Costco there, what a mess that place is...ugh....also we like to go to New Roc City which seems like a great place to hang if your a teen looking for skirt.

New Rochelle is really a city, a bit smaller than White Plains. So, it has the advantages and disadvantages unique to citylife. 3 of its 6 elementary schools are good, 1 of its 2 middle schools, and the HS, while big, has a lot of resources and opportunities, and doesn't seem as frought as most city schools. So, if your careful about what part of town you live in, you don't need to go a private school route.

The downtown area is kind of gross, and New Roc area is kind of dangerous at nite on weekends. But there are some beautiful suburban sections that are as luxurious as any well-healed town. But what i like is the heterogeneity of the community, rather than the false quality of suburban life. My kids need to grow up with all kinds of folks, not just ones that look and think like them. That's why we chose NewRoc over some of the hudson river towns we were looking at.

Its also about 30m on the train to GCS, which was another main factor.
