TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 What's the rub? Only a minor league deal? His 2009 stats look pretty great to me.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Type B free agent in a depressed market. But the former shouldn't matter because Florida didn't offer arbitration. He tore his cuff in 2008 and missed some time with shoulder problems last year. That's something. Althought the Mets might think "He only missed some time? Where do I sign!"He was negotiating with the Cubs, but they were offering one year, and he wanted two, so him falling to the Mets may be kharmic payback for the Bengie Molina storyline, but I doubt it'll be framed that way.

smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 A lot of teams expressed concern over his shoulder issues. But even 30 innings from him would help our pen. He had the best year of any relief pitcher on the market, many of whom got overly generous deals. This could turn out to be a major steal. And the worst case scenario is the Mets wind up where they were this morning.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Well, if he missed time last year it didn't stop him from throwing 60 innings which is his career best for a season. That 1.95 ERA wasn't shabby either.I like low risk/high reward pickups a lot.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Kiko needs to get Brandon Lyon's agent.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 I've always liked him, and I tend to hate on Tony LaRussa's relievers. We're going to be going to Puerto Rico as the home team.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 You know, he's got a similar act as Brian Stokes with more success.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 More years and shoulder issues than Stokes, though.Less MPH (he's an 88-89 MPH fastball/77-78 MPH slider guy) and more Ks (some GAUDY K/9 numbers the last few years), too.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Yeah, I thought of Stokes as slurvey though. With straight slowish heat that he tries to keep away from folks to set them up for the offspeed pitches.Anyhow, seems like a quality potential replacement for Stokes, to the extent that he needed replacing.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Don't remember having seen him pitch. But with a mostly sub-90 MPH fastball, his K/IP numbers (over 9) very impressive. Does he have a hard to follow delivery?Later
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 A man, a missa kiss, a curveHe kissed the missthen missed the curveBurma ShaveNo real point here - only that the 'miss-able curve' line reminded me of this actual long-ago Burma Shave highway ad.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Ha.Also also, last year's almost-definitely-unsustainable HR rate (1 in 60 innings) helped his Marlin value a bit. Between that and the age and the barky shoulder, though... it's somewhat understandable that major-league interest would be tough to come by.Also, Stokes threw HARD, brah-- mid-to-high 90s. (Then, so did Schoeneweis.)
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 If he's healthy, and they're going to carry him, who gets taken off the 40-man roster to make room for him?
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 So does Ollie. (Hey, nobody's picking him up.)
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Calero may end up doing what the Mets hoped Kelvim Escobar could do. I believe Escobar has been shut down
