You Know What You Get With Kiko

That's what Ron Darling just said of newly signed bullpen hand Kiko Calero.

Would be the first Met to share a name with a Los Lobos album.

Type B free agent in a depressed market. But the former shouldn't matter because Florida didn't offer arbitration.

He tore his cuff in 2008 and missed some time with shoulder problems last year. That's something. Althought the Mets might think "He only missed some time? Where do I sign!"

He was negotiating with the Cubs, but they were offering one year, and he wanted two, so him falling to the Mets may be kharmic payback for the Bengie Molina storyline, but I doubt it'll be framed that way.

A lot of teams expressed concern over his shoulder issues. But even 30 innings from him would help our pen. He had the best year of any relief pitcher on the market, many of whom got overly generous deals. This could turn out to be a major steal. And the worst case scenario is the Mets wind up where they were this morning.

Well, if he missed time last year it didn't stop him from throwing 60 innings which is his career best for a season. That 1.95 ERA wasn't shabby either.

I like low risk/high reward pickups a lot.

I've always liked him, and I tend to hate on Tony LaRussa's relievers.

We're going to be going to Puerto Rico as the home team.

Salty, soy-based sauce with a little Polynesian kick?

You know, he's got a similar act as Brian Stokes with more success.

More years and shoulder issues than Stokes, though.

Less MPH (he's an 88-89 MPH fastball/77-78 MPH slider guy) and more Ks (some GAUDY K/9 numbers the last few years), too.

Yeah, I thought of Stokes as slurvey though. With straight slowish heat that he tries to keep away from folks to set them up for the offspeed pitches.

Anyhow, seems like a quality potential replacement for Stokes, to the extent that he needed replacing.

Don't remember having seen him pitch. But with a mostly sub-90 MPH fastball, his K/IP numbers (over 9) very impressive. Does he have a hard to follow delivery?

He has a miss-able curve.

A man, a miss

a kiss, a curve

He kissed the miss

then missed the curve

Burma Shave

No real point here - only that the 'miss-able curve' line reminded me of this actual long-ago Burma Shave highway ad.

Ha.

Also also, last year's almost-definitely-unsustainable HR rate (1 in 60 innings) helped his Marlin value a bit. Between that and the age and the barky shoulder, though... it's somewhat understandable that major-league interest would be tough to come by.

Also, Stokes threw HARD, brah-- mid-to-high 90s. (Then, so did Schoeneweis.)

If he's healthy, and they're going to carry him, who gets taken off the 40-man roster to make room for him?

Chris Coste looks pretty waive-able.

So does Ollie. (Hey, nobody's picking him up.)
