Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Signed away by the Dodgers.Hit his only homer against Brad Thompson to put the Mets up 7-1 in a late-July laugher as they cruised toward what turned out not to be a division title after all.Was he really 28?
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 I showed up to a game in Milwaukee in June of 2009 and saw the lineups on a TV in the concourse. It said "Reyes" was leading off. I thought for a brief second that Jose had been magically cured and was now back in the starting lineup. Then I remembered that Argenis was on the team.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 The kid who created a "MBTN" worship page on facebook also operates the Argenis Reyes group. Poor kid chooses his heroes poorly.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 In my mind, he is one of the best examples of the notion that you can suck and still be a fan favorite just as long as you don't make lots of money.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Don't forget to have a funny name and not be pressed into too much service. If the team is desperate enough that they might really need to overexpose you, try to get injured.Argenis had this formula down.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Looking like a baby and/or a character from "The Wire" also helps.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 You think he looks like Bodie? Sheee-it.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Hold your head up, hold your head high
Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 And yet the Mets have had two Ambiorixes.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 I just liked saying Uranus Reyes
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 I'm just glad we're keeping our non-heinous Reyes.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Only Argenis in MLB history.[/quote:3tstl0wd]I remember an Argenis Salazar, but Retrosheet has him as "Angel":http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/S/Psalaa001.htm
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 During the week or two he played last year, I saw three games in person with LWBH (an old-movie buff), during which I made her groan thrice with "Argenis and Old Face" jokes about our erstwhile middle infield.[i probably smelled like ShackBurger and Old Beer at the time(s), too. Honestly, I don't know how she let me close enough to get her pregnant.]
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 The Mets were 10-0 in the first ten games in which he played, which must be some kind of Met record. He was batting, slugging and on-basing .316 when that stretch ended.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 My 'favorite' memories were probably when he went a whole month without a hit in late 2008.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 That's pretty funking cool.[/quote:24k8qymg]Isn't it? I've been trying to match up Met winning spurts with first Met appearances and can't find anybody matching Argenis, who had the good sense to sit out the Mets' 3-2 loss to the Phillies the night after he debuted in an 11-1 win over the Cardinals. A ten-game team winning streak commenced immediately thereafter, and Argenis saw action in nine of those contests.Maybe if Argenis had played that one game when he sat, the Mets would have won that night (for evidence would suggest he was best luck charm ever).Tom Paciorek's Mets lost their first game 1-0 and then won the next ten -- but get it right the next time, that's not the same thing.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Reliving the Reyes Hot Start of 'Genny and the Mets, here.
Guest themetfairy Guests Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 D-Dad liked how he looked when we saw him play in Buffalo last August -I remember always worrying about remembering to label him as AReyes in the POTG polls.
