Jane Jarvis for me, too. Her part in the creation of Meet the Mets, plus her many years of service as Shea's Queen of Melody clinches the deal.

And of all the names in all these polls, there's only been one name that I didn't recognize: Chris Majkowski.

I have no idea who that is.

Thanks. I seldom hear the radio broadcasts anymore*, and if I ever knew Majkowski's name I've obviously forgotten it.

*I have the Extra Innings package at home since 2006, and, somehow, I'm rarely in my car when the Mets are playing.

I think it was Gary. Been there since 92 or 93. He's missed only one game, for his sister's wedding. His mother told him he had to be there. That's from a story I think Neil Best did on him a couple years ago.

Not really. I had listed about 48 guys on my post from a few years back, mostly inspired by your blog, and I added another 16 to make 64, mostly looking for guys on the wins, games played, games pitched, or hits list.

I did a quick and dirty seeding, and posted them in eight groups in a "snaking" technique. Group A had the seeds, #1, #16, #17, #32, #33, #48, #49, and #64.

I knew somebody or more than somebody would get screwed by being in a rich group, but hopefully letting half the group advance will protect them from that.

After posting the groups, a dozen new names popped into my mind that I was surprised I had forgotten. Here they are. I guess I'll let the winner on this wildcard list take a spot in round two from the lowest of the 32 folks advancing from the eight groups.

Any of you bloggers, what a great time to tell your readers to register at the Crane Pool to be part of this historic selection process.

Story probably told here before, but always worth repeating: Six years ago, JJ was playing a midday jazz concert at the church that hosts the senior center my wife directs. Natch I made a trip into midtown to listen in. As it was ending, Mrs. Fafif got on the microphone and told the assembled masses that in addition to being a great jazz musician, Ms. Jarvis spent many years as the organist at Shea Stadium. There was a whir of "oh, really?" in the crowd. Mrs. F requested our theme song. Gamely (though I had the sense she probably was fine being known as a great jazz musician), Jane played a few bars of "Meet the Mets" followed by a full-on "Mexican Hat Dance," with everybody clapping along.

Damn that was great.

Interesting (in a way) that Willie Mays didn't make any of these lists, yet the Mets have granted him the even higher honor of semi-retiring his uniform number.

I think they should put 24 back in circulation immediately. Don't reserve it for the Rickey Hendersons; give it to the next Kelvin Torve who comes along.

I didn't notice Willie was missing here, though I was thinking over the weekend that a nice touch would be some sort of National League Heritage Pathway of Honor, maybe line the walk from the Rotunda to the Museum with the names of those who Paved The Way for the Mets: Mays, Snider, Mathewson, so on. Subtle recognition of the New York N.L. DNA without bringing more charges of the Mets not focusing on the Mets. I've always maintained that Citi Field should become the home office of baseball in New York, everything that's not or has never been the MFYs. That would include Dodgers, Giants, Negro Leagues, scholastic, semi-pros. Every SABR meeting/event should take place there, at a deep discount. That sort of thing.

Sure, Mookie wouldn't be on the wall every day like 14 37 41 are, but they'd each get featured a bunch of times per season.

That would be beautiful. My one trip to the Oakland Coliseum featured something like that. The A of the Day was Reggie Jackson. Highlights included his 1973 World Series MVP performance. I applauded out of delight to see the Mets on a DiamondVision far from home.

I would assume a big splash from the Mets at least the first year, with a number of inductees to make up for the 8?-year gap between inductions.

Then they'll go back to forgetting it exists in 2011.

I'm also listening (not tone deaf, me) to your "too soon" statements and thinking that maybe we should have a standard of not entering the discussion until 15 years (or 20, or 25 or whatever) after you've come into the fold, though I don't know if a minor league career should count in that case. Feel free to vote your preference in this regard and we can discuss whether to insitutionalize the standard.

Kent, Foster, and Flynn will be replaced on the list in next year either with folks from this auxiiary list of Edgy oversights or newly emerging candidates. Until then, congratulate Ms. Jarvis, the wild card who bumps 32-seed Todd Hundley out of round two. Sorry, Todd.
