METS:
Angel Pagan CF
Luis Castillo 2B
Gary Sheffield LF
Jeff Francoeur RF
Fernando Tatis 3B
Daniel Murphy 1B
Omir Santos C
Anderson Hernandez SS
Nelson Figueroa RHP (1-2, 6.30)

Good to see Francoeur in there.

At ESPN's "Streak for the Cash", this game is on the board as to who will win. 97% have picked the Marlins.

Welcome home Omar!

The rout is on! Well, they got one run, anyway, on a Frenchy double (well hit but misplayed) and a Tatis single. Murphy (line out) and Santos (single) also hit the ball hard, and Andy Handy is up, 2 on and 2 out.

This season has gotten so bad that when I saw that the Mets scored a run, my first reaction was merely, "Oh."

In Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (wherever they play their home games), a seventh-inning RBI single by Josh Peterson has put the Bisons on top of the Yankees 1-0. Jesus Feliciano is 3-4 and has his average up to .307.

Hey, Sheffie is out with a back cramp.

In SWB, Chris Mason has yielded, after seven shutout innings, to Adam Bostick and Jim Ed Warden (who the f...?) who pitch a scoreless eighth. We're in the ninth.

Consecutive Gameday updates:

  • New York Mets left fielder Gary Sheffield left the game due to an injured back.

  • Florida Marlins catcher John Baker left the game due to an injured back.
Dog days, baby.

Sheffield was coming hard around third, and then tried to score backwards, and Baker tried to block the plate backwards as a counterattack, and, well, you know.

Then Fernando Tatis was struck by lightning.

Three-run rally capped by an Argenis Reyes RBI double. Four-zip, kids!

Warden gets the save and it's a shoutout for the Buffs.

Mets meanwhile get through the bottom of the eighth and look for a win with the league's least powerful team in the league's most power-absobing ballpark. And it's raining.

Let's go, Mets!

I understand, the only thing left to play for is because the games are on the schedule. I don't want to hear "spoiler" crap.

I try to take each game as an entity unto itself. Try to enjoy them as a single night, in summer, a game's on, Mets are playing, let's see if they can make a game of it. The kind of thing I'll be pining for in January. But they're so god damned bad at the dish.

Except that there's literally nobody left on this team that I care about. At all. I should tune in to see Anderson Hernandez and Fernando Tatis? Bleh.

To see if Francoeur and/or Santos can put up OBPs over .300 for the year?

Failing that, there's always the mordant humor-- now that Johan's gone, I'm done feeling bad-- in seeing who'll go down next. Think of it as an orange-and-blue Summerstock edition of "Final Destination."
