It occurs to me that the article might not do the greatest job of explaining their appeal to the non-initiates. From my Chicagoan friend Dave:

Oh, he wasn't arguing FOR Harrelson, Santo or any of the other homers... just making a point about the article's slant. (He continued, "I have to say that I do like Darling. I genuinely like broadcasters who give insights that I can't see or know because I never played at that high a level. He's good that way.")

Your friend has a great point. If I tuned to an Angels broadcast and heard them clowning around like GK&R do I don't think I would say they are great....


I like the article plenty , I often don't like Keith's boredom in the booth.

I think Gary, Keith, and Ron are a great team for Mets fans. I don't expect fans of other teams to enjoy them nearly as much. I'm sure they come across as buffoons, just as many of the other teams' broadcast teams look like buffoons to us. (Some, though, really ARE buffoons.)

I think it's an acurate article though.

I love the booth. They are a great team that is informative, funny and honest.

I think the main thrust of the article is that local baseball announcers - because they do so many games - need to become an acquired taste for the regular followers, and that these three have done just that.
Network announcers, especially for football games since virtually all of those are aimed towards a national audience, operate under a whole different set of "rules" as to what kind of talk/behavior is acceptable in the booth.
