G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Nice story on the Snigh booth in the Obersver here[/url:hexw3pyb]. Passing quote from blogger made me aware, but story would be good even without it.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Good article.Did you practice that quote?
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2009 Author Posted July 15, 2009 Wind me up and sometimes a usable sentence emerges.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Funny they mention Keith's dinner plans and the wine discussion from a few weeks ago.Whenever they start talking about drink in the booth, if I'm at home, I'm getting a drink. I'm highly suggestible.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Great article...Best on-air crew I've watched with no disrepect to the original three.I have to admit I liked McCarver in 86. Probably a product of winning every damn day
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 It occurs to me that the article might not do the greatest job of explaining their appeal to the non-initiates. From my Chicagoan friend Dave:]Wait. Just so I have this right, the Mets have the best broadcast team because Keith Hernandez doesn't know how the equipment in the booth works and would rather talk about wine than baseball; because Gary Cohen calls all homers in the same way; because Ron Darling brings the unique ability to talk about things that happened in the past; and because collectively they don't know what they're going to talk about going into a game? Got it.

(He continued, "I have to say that I do like Darling. I genuinely like broadcasters who give insights that I can't see or know because I never played at that high a level. He's good that way.")
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Your friend has a great point. If I tuned to an Angels broadcast and heard them clowning around like GK&R do I don't think I would say they are great....I like the article plenty , I often don't like Keith's boredom in the booth.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 I think Gary, Keith, and Ron are a great team for Mets fans. I don't expect fans of other teams to enjoy them nearly as much. I'm sure they come across as buffoons, just as many of the other teams' broadcast teams look like buffoons to us. (Some, though, really ARE buffoons.)
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 And when Keith's ADHD kicks in, well...
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 I'm not convinced that article paints them in all that favorable a light.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 I think it's an acurate article though.I love the booth. They are a great team that is informative, funny and honest.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 I think the main thrust of the article is that local baseball announcers - because they do so many games - need to become an acquired taste for the regular followers, and that these three have done just that.Network announcers, especially for football games since virtually all of those are aimed towards a national audience, operate under a whole different set of "rules" as to what kind of talk/behavior is acceptable in the booth.
