The Post predicts holdout blues:

Some info on Damien Magnifico

There's a lot of headline writers around New York who will be hoping to see the MetsNew York Mets fifth-round pick make it to The Big Show. Damien Magnifico, clearly a candidate for the All-Name Team at the very least, is a 6-foot-1, 180 pound right-hander from North Mesquite (Tx.) High School. Magnifico was ranked as the 55th best prospect in the state of Texas by Baseball America.

One thing to note in the following write-up from BA is that Magnifico is rumored to be interested in a seven-figure bonus, which it determined would make him unsignable.
Given the Mets history for sticking to slot, it's hard to argue that Magnifico won't be signing with the Mets if he really wants that kind of money - unless, as the Mets have hinted in months leading up to the draft, they are willing to change that approach.

Here is the info from BA on Magnifico:

Another raw righthander drawing interest is Damien Magnifico, who has touched 94-95 mph. Though he's just 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, he generates his velocity mostly with a quick arm rather than effort.

Magnifico's fastball is fairly straight, and his curveball and command are quite raw, so he's still a work in progress. Though he hasn't committed to a four-year school and is ticketed for Howard JC, he'll be unsignable if reports that he wants a seven-figure bonus are true.

It'd be nice if the Mets stop colluding, but I have no idea if this is the guy to open the purse for. As a high school pitcher, I doubt it. Tengo duda.

Better than 10% of draftees came from Texas, including a handful by the Mets. Damien wasn't even the only crazy Hollywood Texan name. We've got Cody Rogers (Tampa Bay), Slade Heathcott (Yankees), Randall Fant (Boston), John Stilson (Minnesota), Brandon Belt (San Francisco), Austin Wood (Detroit), Samuel Elam (Yankees), Richard Testa (Colorado), Burundi Davis (Chicago), and Hunter Hill and Joseph Leftridge (Atlanta, drafting out of the SEC on occasion).

I'd ride into a gunfight with that crew.

If he's only the 55th best prospect in Texas (doesn't sound right) and only ticketed for JuCo he's probably not in a position to go demanding million+ dollar bonuses.

Agreed.

I'd be curious to meet the humblest Magnifico.

Mets Proospect Hub: Can you give us a scouting report on yourself? What pitches do you throw, etc...

Damien Magnifico: I throw a fastball and curveball, but I'm hoping to learn better offspeed pitches the right way. I live at 92 to 95 and have touched 97. My offspeed pitch is a spike curveball, I don't really know the velocity on it.
Edgy DC: B+

MPH: Does the idea of playing in New York excite you, even if it's not for the Yankees?

DM: Yes, I am excitied, my family is from New York.

EDC: D+. He had a real opportunity to set the record straight on the Yankees and passed.

MPH: A few non-baseball questions, if you don't mind. Favorite: book, movie, band/musical artist?

DM: Sandlot (movie), and country music

EDC: Incomplete, D (because the movie is highly flawed), and D (because "country" is way to weak and overbroad an answer).

MPH: Do you prefer Damien or DJ?

DM: Damien out of those 2...how did you find out about DJ?? Most people call me D-mag or D.

EDC: D-, with some barfing.

Damien gets a GPA of 1.34 for this interview. Back to cool school for you, son.

Be cool. D-Mag... er, Damien was set up there.

He's a kid, and he was set up. Granted.

But between the pecs and the rumors and the interview, I'd be lying if I said I didn't detect a whiff of Clemensy-freshness.

OK, we're friended up but he hasn't consented yet to an interview.

Damien's current Facebook thought of whimsy suggests he's from the Bouton school by way of MFS62:

"A ballplayer spends a good piece of his life gripping a baseball, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time."

But his previous comments project the flower of youth.

"You're only young once, but you can be immature forever."

"Always gonna act like a kid cuz if i act mature people think im dumb so by actin childish i am smarter :p"

"Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile way and you have their shoes."

And he's not afraid to refer to himself in the third person, or to lol at his own work.

when life gets to hecktic, sit down put in a fat pinch n let the good times roll.--- always been a D-MAG saying lol"

In the responses to that comment he lets out on July 9 that the Mets haven't made an offer yet. I think they might be monitoring his Facebook page while weighing their options.
