Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 As I was watching Putz pitch, I was thinking, well, they still have Green in the pen if they want to quickly end the game.He might as well wear Heilman's number. He's going to be seen in the same light.I was sure Rodriguez would pitch the tenth. I was wrong.

Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Well that sucked. Just handing over the game and all.Uh, boo.
Guest GYC Guests Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 I thought Jerry said earlier this year that he wasn't going to manage to thesave stat. I though I remember him saying that he fell victim to the closer'srole and the save stat while a manager in Chicago. Did he actually say this,or am I completely losing my mind / dreaming big? Like, I did a quick searchand can't find evidence, but I'd swear I read it somewhere. If he did say it,he was full of shit.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 IIRC, the 'not managing for the save stat' remark came in answer to a question of whether he would hesitate to use Putz in a "closer's situation" even though it would cost Rodriguez a few. He said nothing about his willingness to use both closers in the tricky 'tie game on the road' situation - one that managers apparently feel will leave them vulnerable to the ridicule which comes from having to close a game with a guy not pre-screened for such hazardous duty.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Instead he ends up in a tie game with someone less capable of bringing home the win.Deliberately. Stop the insanity.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 It really is crazy.I guess there have also been times when the Mets have benefited from this kind of insanity, since the opposing managers also manage this way. So it probably evens out. But I'd like our manager to be smarter than the other guy, so that the Mets win more than their share of games. After Putz I would have gone with Rodriguez, then Stokes, for as long as he'd hold out, and then Green.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 I think Manuel needs to go to the minor leagues for a while.
