Jim Thome

Had no idea, before Sheff jacked his and they started printing lists of the 500 club, that Jim Thome had so many. Does this mean he's a HOF candidate? He's way over the top on Baseball Reference's HOF monitor.

He could be. He was a major star for Cleveland before Phillie. Nice big guy too, never heard any "rumors" about him.

I've only heard good things about Thome. He was active with the Tug McGraw Foundation when he was in Philly, and all reports are that he's a great guy.

I would probably put Thomas first, but that's without really taking a hard look at the numbers.

Now, if you were to advocate both for the HOF, does Carlos Delgado get a look?

My impression is Thome playing most of his games as a first baseman. Thomas was a poster boy for the DH. EDIT: I checked. Thome had twice as many games as a first baseman than as a DH. If you add 3B to 1B, it is around 3:1. Thomas was about 1.4 : 1 as a DH. Later

Thomas was the superior hitter, both at his peak and for his career. a 2x MVP, with around 10 seasons amongst top 5 OPS+, he was among the most dominant hitters of his era. Thome was very good, but his numbers don't really compare favorably, either at his peak, or for his career. Regarding the DH factor, it was not like Thome was an up the middle player or a GG corner man. His ticket to Cooperstown will not be punched because of his glove, so i don't see that as making up the difference between him and Big Hurt. "niceness" aside, i don't think ite even that close a call, as between the 2.

Agreed, Thomas is more HOF worthy than Thome. Although, I'm guessing they both get in.

I thought Thomas was clearly better, but then I checked and it was closer than I thought. Did not know Thome had a .406 OBP over his career. I score it 798,248 for Thome and 967,104 for Thomas as hitters. Does the difference between a firstbaseman/thirdbaseman/DH and a DH/firstbaseman make up for that. I think not, but I think it's an open question.
