Hinch, telling him he had been traded for Dunn. Buck, who was traveling with the Single-A Visalia Oaks, was already on the bus to San Jose, Calif., when Hinch called him. He had to tell teammates of the trade en route."It was kind of funny," Buck said, "because I was rumored to be in a deal for [Mark] Teixeira, so when I just told them they all thought I was messing with them."Buck was drafted by Arizona in the third round of the 2005 draft. Once a top-notch prospect, Buck's draft status fell after had an elbow injury revealed on the eve of the '05 draft that bumped him out of a likely first-round slot. metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Am I wrong in thinking that it didn't take a whole lot to trade for Dunn?
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 that looks cheap to me, where were the mets on this???
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Well, considering that we don't know who 2/3 of the trade involves it's kinda tough to say whether the price is cheap or not.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Arizona has a worse record, so if they claimed him, it never even got to the Mets.

seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 What I'm saying is that it didn't matter, at least not this week. The Mets would never have even gotten a chance. They probably had a chance before the deadline, yes, but not today.

Guest metsguyinmichigan Guests Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Blue Jays just released Shannon Stewart, who hasn't played since an ankle injury in June.

seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Exactly. It wasn't a matter of the Reds waiting around for a better offer -- Dunn had to get through waivers, and Arizona had priority; so they got a shot at him. The Reds had three options: let him go to Arizona for nothing, pull him back and keep him (they then can't trade him at all until the off-season), or work a deal with Arizona. The Mets couldn't have been in the picture, so it doesn't matter.

There is prolly a list of other prospects for Cincy scouts to evaluate and select, it could shirley include better prospects.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 it's also just a 40-game rental. I'd still like to try and sign Dunn in the off-season.

(in partial jest)
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 All trades are opportunitites to rip the Mets.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 ]just too many K'sToo many for what? Do they start subtracting runs if you K too much? No, i didn't think so.Dunn has a career OBP that approaches .400... he's not just a slugger, he's a patient and selective hitter. Does he strike out alot? Yup. But he walks alot too. In addition, he is usually amongst league leaders in HRs.Ultimately, an out is an out. Some outs are more productive than others, but putting a ball in play can also create mutliple outs, or force the lead runner, and the sacrifice of power to put the ball in play is rarely worth it, in my view, as it, like bunting, may increase the chances of scoring 1 run, but decreases the chances of scoring mutliple runs. And unless you're in Dodger Stadium in the mid-1960s, 1 run strategies are rarely good ideas. Now, you probably don't want an entire lineup of guys like this, because balance is important to avoid a "boom or bust" offense, but having a 28-year old LHed OF/1bman who can give you a line of 100r /100rbi /40hr /.900 OPS to hit behing Reyes, Wright and Beltran seems like a pretty good idea to me.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Paul Byrd to the Red Sox for a PTBNL
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Ahh for fecks sake Minaya....were you in for Byrd...trying to muster fake outrage here...not working.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 Reports say one PTBNL in the Dunn Deal is Micah Owings
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 Interesting. So the D-Backs get two (or three) more months out of Owings because he wouldn't clear waivers. That's creative maneuvering on their part. Still, I'd hate to feel like a lame duck. It makes the deal look significantly better for the Reds, although Owings is a work in progress as a pitcher.Arizona has managed to acquire Dunn and Jon Rauch without dealing from the top of their deck. If they make the playoffs and the Mets don't, that will reflect poorly on Minaya.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 ] So the D-Backs get two (or three) more months out of Owings because he wouldn't clear waivers.Sorry but I am not getting what you mean here .
Guest sharpie Guests Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 Owings is in the minors, not like Arizona is getting anything out of him although he could be brought up in September, likely to pinch-hit.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 Vlad is going to spontaneously combust when he sees that Micah Owings was traded to a team other than the Mets.On a seperate note I see that Sheffield - he of 2 homeruns hit last night - has cleared waivers.I think he's got $14 million due him next year.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 I don't believe you can PTBNL a player on the 25-man roster. If it is Owings I don't know what would be keeping him from being named unless he's doing some rehab
Guest sharpie Guests Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 Owings is not on the 25-man roster but is on the 40-man roster. I don't know if that makes a difference or not.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 Well, we're going back some 40 years but some of the Mets most celebrated PtBNLs --- Harry Chiti, Gus Bell --- were on the 25.
