A Little Late

Instead of dismissing Peterson, mightn't it have been a good idea to transfer him to an upstairs development job? Something akin to his unofficial title of "CEO of Pitching"?

OK, a month late. Just a thought.

Good thought but if you do that don't you think you're kind of taking the legs out from under your current pitching coach?

There's an issue with John Maine that Warthen maybe hasn't figured out - get Peterson down here stat!

I think the CEO of pitching thing never really worked out in practice. If so the guy they promoted from AAA wouldn'ta been so different stylistically than Peterson.

That article about Lincecum mentioned that Peterson and Duquette have gone into biz together.

Maine is advised to get his head out of his ass and start pitch like he's capable of. Far too many unacceptable starts from him this year.

I have no probs with them differently styled. One guy pats the right cheek, the other the left cheek.

What I like is the notion of all the pitching coaches in the system having biomechanical profile of each pitcher in the system.

The idea wouldn't be to undercut Warthen, but to collect data for him on what works.

I realize that it's just a thought, but I like the idea of an organzational coordinator for pitching and batting, and I advocated for moving Peterson upstairs long ago.

I think he should bust 'em inside.

I f I remember correctly there was an organization philosophy when Peterson was here , if so what happened to it. What are Tony Bernazard's responsibilities in this?

And last year too. His final start of the season was a gem, but there were far too many bad outings from him in August and September. He gets a share of blame for the collapse.

My hopes for Maine brightened this spring, but they're dimming again. (And I'm really glad that Pelfrey has been taking up his slack.)

I believe his job is to translate into street Spanish.

I don't know that moving Peterson upstairs would have undercut Warthen, necessarily. If they brought in a Leo Mazzone/Mel Stottlemyre "proven" major-league pitching coach, then maybe. But this is Warthen's first time coaching at the major league level, right? So it wouldn't have necessarily hurt to have Peterson around.

Maybe the organization was just sick of Peterson; it happens. You move on.

He wasn't "Willie's guy," though, he was Howe's. So it wouldn't have been strange for the organization to keep him on either. Is it telling that he hasn't found a new organizational home yet?

Warthen's had a couple of other big-league pitching coach positions. Seattle, San Diego and Detroit IIRC.

None of the staffs were anything to write home about.

Well, it's only been a few weeks. I think it will be more telling if he's still unemployed next spring.

Maine did get a little unlucky last time out (infield hit and shallow bloops between the walks and HBPs). But he has to get it together.

Amazin' how the Tony Bernazard is The Devil Incarnate stores stopped arriving now that Willie is out of the picture.

Gee, ya think "a source close to the Mets" coulda been Willie himself?

Ah. Then screw you and the horse you rode in, Rick Peterson. We don't need your effing help. Just think of the money the organization is saving in hair product alone.

Or the team started winning so nobody cares anymore.
