Damn, that's a rather ugly line up. Opposing pitchers only have three or four hitters that should seriously concern them, then they just have to avoid making mistakes to the others. If they can do that, a pitcher can hold this line up in check.

Tonight, the Cardinals just need to be careful with Reyes, Wright, and Church. The rest can generally be handled if you just make good pitchers and avoid mistakes. Pelfrey and the pen (gulp) had best be on tonight.

If Delgado had struck out, I think that Wayne Hagin would have done a reverse-Milton Bradley by leaving the dugout to attack a player. Hagin was very critical, and rightly so, of Delgado waiving at breaking balls out of the strike zone on the first two pitches. Nothing wrong with what he said but you'd never hear it from Sterling, Waldman, YES, or just about anywhere else.

I heard that too. I'm still on the fence about Hagin. Too often he sounds like he's trying to entertain me, instead of letting the game be the entertainment.

You know that fake the pitchers do w/runners on first and third that they never fall for? My son's HS summer team, which is 0-10-2, fell for it. The runner from first broke when the pitcher faked toward 3d, the pitcher got the runner from first going to 2d and when the pitcher threw to 2d, the runner from 3rd broke and the other team got him at the plate. Good times!

In hagin's defense, an awful lot of the Mets games aren't all that entertaining of late.

Interesting comment, JCL--we don't want a homer, we don't want a cheerleader, we don't want a dope, we want honesty but perhaps Hagin is trying too hard. Sometimes I wish he'd just relax. I wonder if he was like that in St. Louis and Colorado (and if so, is that why he was fired from both places).

Pelfrey helps his cause with a 2-out RBI single, and Reyes' (Jose, not the newbie) clears the bases with a 3-RBI single. That's a nice 2-out rally!

Endy follows up with a double, and we're up to 9-0 Mets in the third!

One of the most promising aspects of this season has been the maturation of Mike Pelfrey. He has finally started to fulfill promise of his potential during his last 5-6 starts. His development is key for the Mets future.

Maybe they'll pull Reyes for Reyes in another inning or two.
