Mets Hall of Fame

I visited the Mets Hall as part of my Shea bucket list. Of course it is woefully lacking in so many ways. Maybe we can get a proper version in Citi Field.

But there's one thing I can't figure out. All the players are depicted in uniform with a likeness from their playing days -- except one.

Cleon Jones' bust has him in a jacket and tie, looking older, as he probably looked when he was inducted.

How come? Any ideas?

Part of me thinks they haven't inducted anyone in a while is because they'd have to add another display case. That one is full.

But when they do, the thing is just plain incomplete without:

1) Darryl
2) Doc -- I know both have issues, but look how high they are on the team's leaders lists even 20 years later.
3) John Franco
4) Fonzie
5) Piazza
6) Davey Johnson

and you can make a case for:
6) Frank Cashen
7) Todd Hundley
8) Jesse Orosco
9) Ron Darling
10) Hojo

What do you think?

Here's the Cleon bust

I'd pass on Hundley, but the other nine are all certainly worthy of some sort of recognition.

I'd say that the first five are the most likely candidates, with Orosco-Darling-Hojo-Cashen-Davey in decreasing order of likelihood.

I think there are too many non-players to keep Doc and Darryl out. I'd also put in Franco, Fonzie and Piazza.

Darryl and Doc, yes. (Stronger YES to Darryl since he's come "home.")
Franco, not sure.
Piazza and Davey: Definitely.
Fonzie: Probably.

Cashen: Yes.
Hundley: No.
Orosco: No.
Darling: Yes.
HoJo: Maybe.

These are the guys (and gal) who are already in:

Joan Payson, Casey Stengel, Gil Hodges, George Weiss, Bill Shea, Johnny Murphy, Lindsey Nelson, Ralph Kiner, Bob Murphy, Bud Harrelson, Rusty Staub, Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Ed Kranepool, Cleon Jones, Jerry Grote, Tug McGraw, Mookie Wilson, Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, Tommie Agee.

Agee, the last selection, went in in 2002.

I'd also save spots for Rube Walker and Bobby Valentine.

Rube Walker is an inspired choice! How could I overlook him?

Interesting old thread, including alternative versions of StevieJeets and MGiM.

Whoa! I had no idea I had a log-on with the proper spacing in my name. I must have forgotten the password and registered another time...

Shame on me for
A) forgetting that password and log-on three years ago, and
B) Hauling out a debate that was already debated (and having participated in said debate.)

DOOH! It wasn't that hard. I'm a spazz. I'll have to merge my former and present selves.

Per your original question, on Cleon's bust, I get the feeling somebody sent the sculptor the wrong picture. It would be a very Met thing to do.

As for who goes in next, it's obvious: nobody. The Mets' next move, in fact, is to start excommunicating its Hall of Famers so their Hall will be empty. They probably regret starting one in the first place. Ignoring it hasn't been enough for them. Maybe they'll have a nice ceremony where the busts will be melted into one big Jackie Robinson statue.

How fucking great would that be? Somewhere in the Ford plant there's a bust of Cleon Jones, in uniform, with former plant supervisor Fred Delahanty's name under it.

I just sent Marty the question. I'll post when he answers.

Good idea!
