Everybody Loves Xavier, but what would the Mets do with him?

He wouldn't displace Beltran or Church. He could displace Alou, I guess. Or he could be a frequently-used fourth outfielder, given that Alou is bound to miss more time.

But it seems that the current plan is Alou to keep left field warm until Fernando Martinez is ready, which may be as early as next year. (Or even later this year, according to Darryl Strawberry yesterday.)

I'm not saying that they shouldn't get Xavier (if he's really available) but I'm wondering what we should expect to see happen if they did get him.

The NYT had an article yesterday speculating about such a move , I read a similar article from a Pittsburgh paper , a word of caution though from the Times article.

] A possible trade would be complicated for several reasons, not least of which is the Pirates� option to keep Nady for another season at the end of his current one-year contract, signed last January. Nady will not be eligible for free agency until the end of the 2009 season. And after trading away four solid prospects � Carlos G�mez, along with the right-handed pitchers Philip Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey � to acquire Johan Santana in the off-season, the Mets may not have much to offer the Pirates.

He'd also cost prospects or young everyday players that we don't have to give, since that'd be the reason Pitt would trade him.

I'm not sure X is "on the block" but they do have a young guy in the minors with a similar set of skills (RH power, 1B/RF, Steve Pearce), and there's a feeling that the new FO there will look to start making lemonade unless they happen to rocket into contention this summer.

One thing we'd do with him is ask him to help out at first. Remember that he was originally acquired before Delgado with the notion that he'd slot in at first if an oufielder was landed, and in the outfield if a firstbaseman was landed.

Some blogger that I was reading suggested that the Mets could offer Heilman with the possibility of the Pirates giving him his long-standing desire to try and make it as a starting pitcher. I wonder if that'd be enough though, given Aaron's recent struggles.

GOK the Pirates could use more help in their rotation.

Although Nady would not discuss any thoughts he might have about returning to the Mets, he said he had no hard feelings toward the club, despite being traded in the middle of the Mets� pennant run.

I think Pitt will eventually trade Nady (for several reasons) but, at this point, almost all the speculation (and that's all it is) seems to be coming from NY fans and media talking to each other.

And I'm with Grimm in that he doesn't really have a role here (and does anyone remember how bad a fielder he was?).
Plus, he's a full-timer to Pitt even though only a part-timer to us - but that doesn't mean the Pirates are only going to demand scraps for him. To them he's an everyday OFer and whatever trading partner they get has to be prepared to pay for him on those terms.
