Last I checked John Stearns is still alive and therefore ineligible for a memorial spot.

I believe the purpose of calling it "memorial" was to remember the player for the type of player he was. I don't think the player had to be dead to have the roster spot named after him. Atl least that wasn't my intent when I proposed the first name. (Donn Clendennon)

These memorial/honorary spots need to be more specific. On again, off again guys should be one category. Injuries that wipe out an entire season should be another. You should distinguish between your Cliff Floyds and your Mo Vaughns.

Moises Alou is the obvious choice and since he's currently on the list (and likely to spend a considerable time on it throughout the course of the season), what better way to introduce a new award than to name it after its inaugural member.

Clendennon was quite dead when he was added. Yes, the four memorial slots are named for actual dead men. Such an honor was aimed only for the dead guys who were meaningful parts of championship teams.

As I said, that wasn't my original intent. In fact, I wasn't aware that Donn had died when I used the term. But that makes sense.
