Guest metsguyinmichigan Guests Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 This on MLB.com:"After their historic crash earlier this fall, it became apparent the New York Mets need bullpen help, someone like Chad Cordero of the Washington Nationals. The Washington Nationals, meanwhile, are interested in Mets' outfielder Carlos Gomez and right-hander Mike Pelfrey, according to a baseball source.Pelfrey, 23, is a pitcher the Nationals have been coveting since before the July 31 trade deadline. "I think that would be crazy for us to do. The Nats GM, Jim Bowden, always overvalues his players, which is why they can't get anything done.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 No Chad. No Chard. No nobody. If we must have a Chad who throws grounders, I prefer we bring the last one back.Really, it's going to be tough for Minaya not to cash in his chips this offseason, but I hope he doesn't.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 I wouldn't include Pelfrey. I think we're going to need him as a starter next season.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 I think the Mets would do well to show some emotional detachment this offeseason, and work from the perspective of "disappointing step backwards" rather than "historic collapse."
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 Minaya of course knows all about Cordero, too high a price for him I think.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 I declare no flat-brimmed ballplayers shall ever play for the Mets.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 You're tossing out about 1/3 of the Miami --- the city where rich teams go shopping.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 This is allegedly the package that OM turned down at the trade deadline. If he did it then, it might have saved the season. If he didn't do it then, he had a good reason (giving up too much) so why should he do it now?
Guest holychicken Guests Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 A starting pitcher and a A-list prospect ("Unnamed Sources" claim that there is a lot of interest in Gomez and "Unnamed Sources" also claim that Minaya holds him highly) for what would amount to a late inning reliever for us *maybe* eventually a closer? Horrible idea, IMO.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 Get Sanchez healthy for that role.

Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 No we can't.But if we're really hot for relief pitching, then let's get Eric Gagne as a FA.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 ]"I've always felt that it's easier to get a free agent done than a trade done," Minaya.

Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 We have a damn closer already, one of the best in the majors. We'd be overpaying for a setup guy.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 Heilman had a better ERA in more innings last year. Troy Percival had a far better year and can probably be signed to a one-year contract plus an option. David Riske is also a viable free agent option who's a better pitcher than Cordero. Cordero's value is inflated because he's a closer, which he won't be here. It can't be so hard to find a right-handed setup guy that you'd part with one top prospect to get one, much less two. I see no reason to go there.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 attgig wrote:="metirish"]Get Sanchez healthy for that role.that's what i'm thinking, but ... can we really count on him?Of course not.Four rules.1) Nothing is a given. You can't pencil anybody in as automatic anything.2) This is particularly true of pitchers.3) This is particularly particularly true of relief pitchers.4) Relief pitcher coming off of a blank season after surgery? Expect nothing and delight in anything you get.The answer is redundancy, baby. All that said, Cordero has yet to have a bad year. But you know me. I'm all about the internal development pipeline, spiced up by free agents.
Guest OlerudOwned Guests Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 I'm still all about Jon Rauch.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 I'd like to steal J.C. Romero from the Phillies.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 WE HAD A FUCKING CHANCE TO GET ROMERO LAST SEASON AND OMAR FUCKED THAT UP AND HE WENT TO BOSTON AND SUCKED BUT STILL.I'm being totally irrational .

Look how tiny the ball is in his hand. I believe he's wanted for questioning in connection to several children found in the DC area partially eaten.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 The key question about Jon Rauch is, of course, by acquiring him would we be "sticking it to the Yankees?"If the answer is no, then we need to look somewhere else.
Guest OlerudOwned Guests Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 I'm sure we could at least swing a deal for one of them.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Wait, he's 6'10" and there are three of him?!?! Sign him now, Omar.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 This is the fella that Keith used to call chewbacca before he decided to shave the beard and trim the hair?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Most current sources say 6'11'".They usually accompany that with "tallest pitcher ever."
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 I sat just a few rows behind the Nats bullpen at Wrigley this season, and can report that Rauch is gigantic. John Patterson is very tall and Rauch towered over him.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Seriously, they must have a special budget to outfit their relief corps. Here's Ray King, the small guy in the Nats' bullpen. The first picture that comes up when you Google "Ray King" is an overhead shot:
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Wow, and I thought the Rockies were wearing ugly uniforms. That alternative "sailor suit" look that the Nationals have is hideous.
