Guest OlerudOwned Guests Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Atlanta has wasted no time, kicking off the winter's action by dealing shortstop Edgar Renteria to Detroit for a pair of outstanding names: Jair Jurrjens and Gorkys Hernandez. They're both young pitchers (edit- blah blah Gorkys is actually an outfielder), but who cares? Jair and Gorkys. Gorkys and Jair.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Headline in Atlanta.Gorkys Park(s) onesGorkys taken to the Park ...
Guest OlerudOwned Guests Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 ="Wikipedia"]Trivia * Jurrjens can speak four languages: English, Spanish, Dutch, and Papiamentu. That could make for some head-spinning, Esa Tikkanesque trash talk.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Quick! Name five Mets players who were able to speak Papiamentu!
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Wow. So Jose's back to being the third best shortstop in the division. Progress!
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Wow! Can't say that Schurholz (or now successor) have ever been afraid to make the big trade.I saw that Jurrjens guy briefly this year and he's got real good stuff. He's also one of Andruw's homeboys (from the Dutch West Indies island of Curacao) so it's obvious the Braves have some kind of quota going on here. Since they'll probably lose Andruw they were forced by the quota system to snag Jurrjens. As I recall the Braves have a good SS in their system who they probably think is just about ready - and knowing how things usually go he'll come up and out-play Renteria from opening day onward.
Guest OlerudOwned Guests Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 I'd assume you mean Yunel Escobar, who was certainly impressive this year for the Braves while Renteria was hurt. Seems like a mutually beneficial deal. Detroit needed a shortstop, Carlos Guillen legs just can't do the job anymore.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Actually I was thinking about Elvis Andrus (they're cornering the market on best first names) but he's probably not ready yet and Escobar was impressive last season while Renteria was shelved.Good deal for Detroit. I guess Guillen becomes more or less a full-time 1B next year. Wither Sean Casey?

Oh, come on, this was easy! The answer is, of course, Danny Heep, Lute Barnes, Mike Glavine, Roy Staiger, and, this last one was the tricky one, Mark Clark. Thanks for playing, everybody!
Guest sharpie Guests Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 For a good player Renteria has been on a lot of teams: Marlins - Cards - Red Sox - Braves - Tigers.
Guest metsguyinmichigan Guests Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Hernandez just spent the summer here in Grand Rapids playing for the West Michigan Whitecaps -- in the low-A Midwest League. He could hit a little.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Has there ever been a major leaguer (or anyone else for that matter) named Gorkys?Of course he'll become a star, and they'll make a movie about his success, and all those who kidded him about his name. They'll title it;Gorkys' RevengeSorryLater

Brent Lillibridge might get a chance to make the roster out of Spring Training, though.

We who heard him know that's what Casey Stengel was speaking.Later

Guest martin Guests Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 that guy gorkys, his name reminded me of that "down to gorky park" line from the song "winds of change". so now i am involved in a flullblown youtube scorpions festival. i am being rocked like a hurricane. for me the offseason is shaping up pretty good so far.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 I don't see how the Braves don't throw and eight-year, $300 million offer at A-Rod now.
